Mike Silverman (a.k.a. That 1 Guy) may have started as a classically trained bassist, but with his creation of the beautiful monstrosity that is The Magic Pipe, he has entered weirdly wonderful, deliciously uncharted territory. Seven feet of galvanized steel and hardware store trinkets, the metallic, one-stringed instrument is brought to life by an array of electronic gadgets. Silverman claims the pipe, "not only has a limitless harmonic and sonic range, but limitless rhythmic possibilities as well." When That 1 Guy performs live, his imagination is what truly seems limitless. On top of his infectious, innovative style, the artist throws more avant-garde treats into the mix, like impassioned Whodini covers and electrified cowboy boots. Faced with the seemingly impossible task of conceiving a follow-up album to his debut Songs In The Key Of Beotch (Righteous Babe), laden as it was with songs like "It's Raining Meat" and "Weasel Potpie," Mike has risen to the occasion with his brand new release The Moon is Disgusting. From the earthy blues of the title track and the tribal stomp of “Bananas,” to the a capella treated vocals of “Dig,” the hip-hop beats of “Butt Machine” and the pastoral-to-abstract psychedelic trip of “Rainbow,” The Moon is Disgusting traces the evolution of man from animals in the jungle to machines orbiting the earth, a kind of 2001: A Space Odyssey for the head. The Moon may be Disgusting, but That 1 Guy’s music is anything but!
“Necessity is the mother of invention. But in the case of Mike Silverman’s
slamming, futuristic funk act, That 1 Guy, the normal rules of biology just
don’t apply.” (Andrew Gilbert
Billboard/Express) “That 1 Guy’s tunes are ‘eargasms’ lingering sublimely in your subconscious long after the show ends. All we as an audience could do was sit rapt, mouths gaping, and witness this amazing spectacle.” (Sylvia W. Chan SF Bay Guardian)That 1 Guy, The Moon is Disgusting (* * * * 1/2)"If conventional musical instruments fail, then invent your own. Meet Mike Silverman, the Berkeley California-based inventor of The Magic Pipe, a frame of steel pipes with microphones inside them that are plugged into an amplifier. A single bass string is strung from top to bottom that he plucks, bows, slaps, and/or kicks. The thing also belches smoke, something a modern cello might do only during the direst of circumstances. As That 1 Guy, Silverman’s alter ego, the music is a Zappa-esque spectacle of Mahler-meets-Trance with Deep Purple thrown in for good measure. The sound is huge but it’s just Silverman and his Pipe. The most entertaining record of the year, by far." (NBC San Diego) Dosh was previously advertised as the opener for the evening, but unfortunately has had to cancel his appearance at The Cedar.
