Fendika

This troupe of accomplished azmari musicians and dancers from Ethiopia features six performers, including two dancers and a singer, and authentic instruments including kebero drums, masenko (a one-stringed bowed fiddle), and krar (a five- or six-stringed lyre). The troupe was founded in 2009 by Melaku Belay, the world’s foremost interpreter of eskista, a traditional Ethiopian trance dance of athletic shoulder movements that presage hip-hop movements of breaking and popping.

A-WA

Sisters Tair, Liron, and Tagel Haim grew up in a small southern Israeli village near the Egyptian border. The family’s Yemeni Jewish roots — and their love of the Yemenite language, an old and nearly extinct dialect of Arabic spoken by Yemeni Jews — inspired the Haim sisters to develop a sound that weaves traditional Yemeni music and women’s chanting into a modern, riveting electronic groove, produced by Balkan Beat Box’s Tomer Yosef.
