Alison BrownHow sweetly she has taught her banjo to sing, whether humming winkingly behind the melody or delivering it with a breathy humanness that is as technically awesome as it is melodically seductive. (The Boston Globe)
Acoustic instrumental music has never been so beautifully represented as by the Alison Brown Quartet. Alongside Quartet members John R Burr (piano), Larry Atamanuik (drums), and Garry West (bass), Brown's signature hybrid of bluegrass, jazz, folk, and Celtic has been winning over both traditional and mainstream audiences for over a decade. Joining the Quartet tonight will be special guest Joe Craven (fiddle/mandolin/percussion), who is well known to fans of acoustic music for his 17-year stint with the David Grisman Quintet. Craven never ceases to amaze and entertain with his one-man-band-like ability to play everything including the kitchen sink and his hilarious tall-tale versions of the history of jazz. The Alison Brown Quartet with Joe Craven will deliver a musically dazzling and high octane evening of acoustic music.
Alison Brown is a Harvard alum, received her MBA from UCLA, and worked as an investment banker before joining Alison Krauss and Union Station in 1989. Praised by both fans and critics alike, Brown's take on the traditionally Appalachian instrument has earned her features on CBS Sunday Morning, NPR's All Things Considered and in The Wall Street Journal and The New York Times. Her new album The Company You Keep (Compass Records) will be available everywhere March 3, 2009.
