Boiled in Lead

12/15/2007 - 8:00pm

Boiled in LeadBoiled in LeadAs they head into their 25th year of performing their unique blend of Celtic rock'n'reel, Boiled In Lead have retained a freshness and vitality that escapes far younger bands.

The "neo-classic" BiL lineup of Todd Menton (vocals / guitar / mandolin / bodhran / whistle), Drew Miller (bass), Dean Magraw (guitar), David Stenshoel (fiddle) and Robin "Adnan" Anders (drums / percussion) features uniformly great musicians who each bring a lifetime of far-flung musical exploration to the boil.

The band have just finished recording a new studio album, to be released in early 2008 to mark their 25th anniversary. From their first concert at Goofy's Upper Deck, through annual First Avenue Mainroom appearances on St. Patrick's Day, BiL have always charted their own path between beauty and ugliness, between rock and folk, between silence and noise. The five players improvise freely yet stay in sync, playing a vital mix of original and traditional material that sounds fresh and highly identifiable. Over the years, BiL and the individual musicians have won over 20 Minnesota Music Awards, and toured throughout the US and in Europe.

"...the prime purveyor of a style of Celtic music infused with punk-rock
attitude, developing over the years with a hard-driving swirl that combined Irish folk with heavy rock and elements of styles from all over the world. ...one of the best bands Minnesota's ever produced. (When they play) all-acoustic, ...don't be fooled into thinking that means 'quiet' - even without amplification, Boiled In Lead can summon up furious punk-folk energy." - The Onion

boiled in lead

Is the Boiled in Lead concert on December 15th acoustic, electric, or both? I've only seen them acoustic and want to see them do some heavier electric stuff.

Re: boiled in lead

I put your question to Drew of BiL Here's his response:

"We have a saying "If you can hear it, it's acoustic!"
The long answer is that we generally don't set up the drum kit at Cedar, nor do we play electric guitars there. Usually. But both have been known to happen in the past."

Thanks for the comment.

Brian at the Cedar

light and heavy!

If you didn't go last night you missed what is IMO the best show they've done at the Cedar since the first time they came out in this incarnation.

Despite the 'acoustic' tag, Lead can still get pretty gosh darn heavy, but for the real crunch go to the St Patrick's Day show at 1st Ave.
