This week's shows
When you've recorded all the material at past shows at The Cedar, where else other than The Cedar would The Brass Kings choose to do a CD release for their new album Live Humdinger (8pm Fri Feb 26)? They'll have a bunch of special guests along, including soulful singers Jon Rodine and Jayanthi Kyle (Black Audience), Dave Babb, and Jillian Lantry. Cheekily named Two Many Banjos from Duluth will get the party started before they adjourn to Palmers for their own show. Sponsored by 90.3 and 106.7 KFAI
Some of the most buzzed-about bands in town stop by for a triple-header on Saturday: No Bird Sing, Lookbook and Kill The Vultures (8pm Sat Feb 27). Lookbook should be in good spirits at this homecoming from a 3 week East Coast tour (and a week or so before they head for SXSW), and will be releasing a vinyl version of 2009's Wild at Heart. Expect a big crowd for this one. Standing room only. Sponsored by 89.3 The Current, City Pages, and More Cowbell.
Another big crowd is brewing for the Punch Brothers featuring Chris Thile (7.30pm Mon Mar 1). The Brothers may have their roots in bluegrass, but under the influence and genius of ex-Nickel Creek-er Chris Thile, they hold nothing back in exploring other musical genres from chamber to folk to rock, and are as likely to cover Radiohead or The Strokes as they are Bach. They've got a new album Antifogmatic coming out later this year, so there'll be some new tunes. Can't recommend this one highly enough. Consider getting tickets in advance, as a sellout is entirely possible. Sponsored by MBOTMA and Radio Heartland
Portland indie folk artist Laura Veirs makes her third trip back to the Cedar (7.30pm Tues Mar 2) with her group Hall of Flames, and her peach of an album July Flame gaining national attention. Colorful songs bursting with juicy metaphors, and increasingly richly textured singing and playing from Laura and her bandmates, this peach is ripe and sweet, and ready to be enjoyed right now. This show is presented by Mr Chan, with opening acts Old Believers and Cataldo. Sponsored by 89.3 The Current and Radio K.
Next week:
I am anticipating we may experience technical problems as we upgrade the Cedar website and email newsletter transmission system, and that may prevent me sending out this email newsletter next week, so in case that happens, here's a quick reminder on next week's 416 Club Celtic (8pm Fri Mar 5). It will be hosted by Boiled in Lead's Drew Miller with The Langer's Ball, The HiBs, and BiL compadre Todd Menton. A great way to kick off St Patrick's month, and only $5 at the door! Sponsored by 90.3 and 106.7 KFAI
That's all for this week. See you at The Cedar soon…and remember, bring a friend or three!
