Dark
Murzik CD release with Bella Ruse
After nearly two years of artistic silence, Murzik makes a comeback with their most ambitious release to date, new album A Cat Named Murzik. Spending the past two years on re-evaluating their creative direction, the band finds itself emerging from a contemplative respite armed with new talent and vigor. Originally formed by long-time college friends singer-songwriter Bryan Steenerson and accordionist Nathan Simar, the lineup now includes cellist Ryan Pfeiffer, violinist Christopher Becknell, and drummer Alex Budrow.
Loudon Wainwright III with Jerree Small
Singer, songwriter, actor and social commentator Loudon Wainwright III has now lived longer than his father, and appropriately enough has chosen to mark the occasion with a new album Older Than My Old Man Now, inspired by five generations within the family. With more than 40 years of songwriting and performing under his belt, Loudon has a wealth of material to draw upon, and an ever-sharpening wit that finds humor and wisdom in topics ranging from the profound to the mundane. And yes, perhaps a political song or two is to be expected in an election year.
The Cedar is now fully air-conditioned for your year-round comfort!

SOLD OUT: The Pines record release with Jeffrey Foucault
Journey with The Pines further into darkness, and closer to the light with their new album Dark So Gold. Sounding both rooted in the past and yet with a fresh, contemporary vision, the band is indeed poised to go gold.
Opening will be simpatico singer-songwriter Jeffrey Foucault. As the New Yorker states, "“Foucault’s voice, and his themes, are gruff, sombre, and deep, and his accompanying musicians [on the album], including the Pretenders’ Eric Heywood, on pedal steel, create a sparse, dramatic soundscape.”

Loudon Wainwright III with Meg Ashling
Veteran singer-songwriter Loudon Wainwright III returns to The Cedar, 40 odd years after the release of his first album in 1970. With help from his friend Judd Apatow, Loudon has seen fit to commemorate his rich body of work by releasing a 4-CD, 1-DVD career retrospective called 40 Odd Years. The songs range from early gem School Days to At The End of a Long Lonely Day and lots of ground between. There is also one brand new song, Dead Man. He's not going to be able to perform them all on stage tonight, but you can be sure to be well entertained by this master of pithy songwriting and mordant wit.

Boiled in Lead with Zations
Boiled in Lead return to the Cedar to warm an early December night with acoustic sounds and special guest Zations.
Since their first appearance in 1983 (8th out of 12 bands at the long-demolished Minneapolis punk rock venue The Upper Deck), BiL have been innovators in bringing “folk music” kicking and screaming to rock audiences (and rock music to screaming folk audiences!) Over the years, the band has consistently reinvented itself, expanding its sound (based in folk dance music and songs from many parts of the world) to play at both high and low volume, maintaining an enthusiastic energy in all contexts.
Dark Dark Dark with Brute Heart and The Weather Duo
As we enter the darkest time of the year, take a few hours to enjoy the season with this evening's concert by chamber folk group Dark Dark Dark, who released an EP Bright Bright Bright at The Cedar early in 2010, and, later in the year, released their second full length album Wild Go. They'll have recently returned from a short European tour; be sure to give them an extra warm, home town welcome back!
Tickets go on sale at noon Fri Oct 29 from the Cedar Ticketline (612-338-2674 ext 2), from hard-working Cedar volunteers in the front lobby during shows, from Cedar outlets (Electric Fetus, Irish on Grand, Homestead Pickin' Parlor, and Depth of Field), and online at Ticketweb.
All Cedar shows are all ages. Students with ID may gain discounted admission for tickets purchased at the door.
Phosphorescent with J. Tillman
An evening at The Cedar with indie folk act Phosphorescent, fronted by Matthew Houck, touring in the wake of new album Here's To Taking It Easy, and an opening set by Fleet Foxes drummer and singer-songwriter J. Tillman.
Just 20 seconds into the new Phosphorescent album, you hear something so immediate, so purposeful, so damn infectious, it's clear that something special is underway. The first album of original material since 2007's Pride captures the band moving into a truly extraordinary place. Here's to Taking It Easy is the culmination of the past three years: a grand statement, the album we dreamed Phosphorescent would make.
Jace Everett with Erik Koskinen
Jace Everett is an American country artist. Signed to Epic Records in 2005, he released his debut single "That's the Kind of Love I'm In" in 2005, which peaked at #51 on the Billboard Hot Country Songs charts, and was the first single from his self-titled debut album. He also co-wrote Josh Turner's Number One single "Your Man". But by far Jace's biggest break came when his song "Bad Things" was chosen as the theme for the HBO series True Blood. Just “Google” Jace Everett’s name and you’ll find yourself knee-deep in the ooh’s and ahh’s of daily papers from Boston to Chicago and Seattle that can’t discuss the second season debut of HBO’s rocketing Golden Globe-honored drama TRUE BLOOD without mentioning the brilliant opening title montage, devised around the swampy rockabilly come-on of Everett’s “Bad Things.” True Blood creator Alan Ball’s series and films, including Six Feet Under and American Beauty, have regularly made music cues into iconic characters.
