The Brass Messengers CD release

The Brass Messengers

Join the party as The Brass Messengers release Metal Harvest at The Cedar! Initially a “cover” band trying their hand at the sounds of the Balkans, New Orleans, Latin America and Africa, The Brass Messengers sound is now all their own.  This new sound of Minneapolis fits into no other category than a New Minnesota Sound.  Or as writer Tom Surowicz put it, “A Sprawling Fun Factory”.  This CD release carnival turns the entire Cedar into a stage with theatrics, musical guests, comics and dance.

Bassekou Kouyaté and Ngoni ba with Bato Bato

The return of Malian n'goni master Bassekou Kouyaté with his band Ngoni ba! As anyone will remember who was at his April 2010 show at The Cedar, Bassekou's concert was one of the year's most rousing. In the intervening time, Bassekou has continued to push the limits for his chosen instrument, a predecessor of the banjo, with unexpected and exhilarating results. His collaborations with Bela Fleck have continued, and he also contributed to the acclaimed recording AfroCubism, which paired renowned Malian and Cuban musicians as had been originally intended for the Buena Vista Social Club recording project.

The Cedar is now fully air-conditioned for your year-round comfort!

Staff Benda Bilili

Like all the finest African bands, Staff Benda Bilili’s swirling complexity removes the option to do anything but dance … Havana cantina, Kinshasa slum, psychedelic club, or London arts centre—this crack outfit would tear the roof off anywhere.”— Independent

Felabration!

On Oct 15, 2010, afrobeat pioneer Fela Kuti would have been celebrating his 72nd birthday, if he hadn't died prematurely from an AIDS-related illness on Aug 2, 1997. We are left with an incredible body of recorded work (45 albums are being re-released by Knitting Factory Records), the hit Broadway musical FELA!, and a growing slew of bands who have taken their inspiration from Fela and together keep the afrobeat movement vital. Tonight, celebrate Fela's life and music, and kick up a sweat with Chicago Afrobeat Project, and DJs Paul Harding and Danny Sigelman. NEW: Enter at the door with your ticket to win a Zombie batch set of six Fela CDs (value $60), courtesy of Knitting Factory Records!

Los Amigos Invisibles with Matt Jennings

Los Amigos Invisibles

“Los Amigos Invisibles emanate pure groove… walking bass lines, percolating percussion, scratchy guitar and relentless drums of a band that knows no difference between arty fun and sensual fire” - Rolling Stone

"[Los Amigos Invisibles] bridge language barriers by making their music relentlessly accessible... Non-stop propulsion makes this summer party disc soar like a non stop to Caracas.” - SPIN

Venezuelan (via Brooklyn) Latin Grammy winners Los Amigos Invisibles bring their explosive live show to The Cedar, sure to be a high point in a year that has seen them hit some of the world's biggest stages, including Bonnaroo, Central Park Summerstage, and Lollapalooza.

Mahala Rai Banda with Red Baraat

Mahala Rai Banda

Global Roots Festival 2010 brings in the big brass to kick things off: the wild gypsy brass music of Mahala Rai Banda (Romania), and the funky dhol 'n' brass North Indian Bhangra fusion of NYC's Red Baraat. Both bands are renowned for the incredible energy they bring to their live performances.

Delhi 2 Dublin

“The highlight of the night was a performance by a group called Delhi 2 Dublin. Imagine the energy and cultural fervour of a huge Indian wedding party colliding with a bunch of drunken Irishmen dancing on a wooden table with fiddles! Delhi 2 Dublin has created their own niche at the intersection of gritty hip hop and electronic beats, traditional Indian influences and that raw Celtic sound that packs a punch – all of which make you want to get up and dance.” Evolving Music
