tUnE-yArDs

"She's the find of the year" - The Guardian

w h o k i l l, the sophomore album by Merrill Garbus’ tUnE-yArDs, is a thrill for fans of the live show that left most stunned in 2010.  No longer is her artful songwriting and soulful voice obscured by digital fuzz as it often was on her solo debut, BiRd-BrAiNs.  Transplanting herself from Montreal to sunny Oakland, California, while touring almost non-stop for over two years, Merrill has stripped tUnE-yArDs away to a more precise, concentrated and vivid sound. w h o k i l l retains the honesty of the lonely bedroom confessional characteristic of her early work, but with the addition of the fangs, claws and dented metal of its new surroundings.

Opening tonight is experimental Brooklyn duo Buke & Gass.

Boiled in Lead with Zations

Boiled in Lead return to the Cedar to warm an early December night with acoustic sounds and special guest Zations.

Since their first appearance in 1983 (8th out of 12 bands at the long-demolished Minneapolis punk rock venue The Upper Deck), BiL have been innovators in bringing “folk music” kicking and screaming to rock audiences (and rock music to screaming folk audiences!) Over the years, the band has consistently reinvented itself, expanding its sound (based in folk dance music and songs from many parts of the world) to play at both high and low volume, maintaining an enthusiastic energy in all contexts.

Breathe Owl Breathe (patio)

Enjoy the fun sounds of eclectic Michigan trio Breathe Owl Breathe outside on the Cedar patio! After wowing the crowd at the Megafaun show in the spring, we just had to bring them back for an encore performance.

The Handsome Family

Taking place under bowed branches and deep within winding corn mazes, The Handsome Family's latest release Honey Moon is full of an awed sense of emotion in the face of nature's mysteries, Brett Sparks (music) and Rennie Sparks (lyrics) branched from their usual canon of the dark and mysterious on "Honey Moon", to establish a theme rooted in the tradition of 19th-century romanticism. It is an album of transcendence, of touching the divine, if only for a moment, through our love of someone else, even if he is a katydid.

Radio Happy Hour with Tapes 'n Tapes, Chris Koza and Geoff Herbach

A fixture at hip New York City club Le Poisson Rouge, and now making a special appearance at The Cedar, Radio Happy Hour is a live variety show featuring an old-time radio comedy/drama and your favorite guest stars from the worlds of film, music, and letters. Hosted by Sam Osterhout, the show engages its guests in a wildly right-angled conversation that careens between interviews, performances, and trivia. And at the center of it all is a short, old time radio comedy in which the guest stars as him or herself or, in some cases, as Nancy Drew.
