Vishten

Vishten

Wrap up your celebrations of St Patrick's Day with this foot-stompin' concert featuring traditional Acadian multi-instrumentalists/dancers Pastelle and Emmanuelle LeBlanc, and Pascal Miousse (fiddle, mandolin, lead guitar). Vishten’s music is a hardy mixture of the French, Irish and Scottish styles of Eastern Canada, with fiery fiddling and powerful step dancing taking front and center. The songs are French, sung by each band member, alone or in four part harmony, and the mood is unabashedly joyful.

Forró in the Dark with Savage Aural Hotbed

Forró in the Dark

“In Brazil, forró literally means party,” says Forró in the Dark’s Mauro Refosco. “It’s a gathering, a good time. The objective is to make people dance,”  which is exactly what Forró In The Dark have been doing since 2005 at their weekly residence at New York East Village nightspot Nublu, where their signature blend of down home forró and urban cool have made them one of the city’s must-see buzz bands.  They have also toured extensively in the US, Canada and Europe and supported Gogol Bordello's North American Tour in October/November 2010. Don't miss the party when Forró in the Dark make a return visit to The Cedar as they take the long way home from their 2011 Bonnaroo Festival appearance.

Novalima with Peña

Afro-Peruvian tradition collides with modern production techniques to create an infectious hybrid. (Jason Bentley, Morning Becomes Eclectic, KCRW)

Like Gotan Project at their best, this Afro-Peruvian outfit takes the rhythmic and melodic forms of its traditional music and make something wholly vital and contemporary out of them. Muscular, idiosyncratic grooves. (The Independent, UK)

With their unique fusion of Afro-Peruvian soul with dub, salsa, hip-hop, Afrobeat, breakbeat and house music, Novalima has earned raves from trend-setting DJs and journalists and has developed a wide following across the globe.

The Johnny Clegg Band

Johnny Clegg is one of South Africa’s most celebrated sons. He is a singer, songwriter, dancer, anthropologist and musical activist whose infectious and vibrant blend of Western pop and African Zulu rhythms exploded onto the international scene and broke through barriers in his own country. Over three decades, Johnny Clegg has sold over five million albums of his brand of crossover music worldwide. He has wowed vast audiences with his audacious live shows and won national and international awards for his outspoken views on apartheid, his perspectives on migrant workers in South Africa and his music. Johnny Clegg’s history is as bold, colorful and dashing as the rainbow country, which he has called home for more than 40 years.

The Right Now

The Right Now

The Right Now plays soul music, and soul music is all about feeling; not style, not fashion, but emotion. The band's new album Carry Me Home (released in March 2010) lives within the four walls erected by the arresting lead vocalist Stefanie Berecz, the stellar songcraft of Brendan O'Connell, the spot-on horns and layers of back-up vocals, and a solid bedrock of rhythm.

Jabali Afrika with Innocent Galinoma

Jabali Afrika

Our music makes you dance, it uplifts the soul and it educates you. Coming to see Jabali Afrika, you become part of the act, because we kill that barrier between the audience and the band. (Joseck Asikoye, Jabali Afrika)

Cedar Season Opener -- FREE, thanks to our donors

Steve Kaul and The Brass Kings, photo by Dan Corrigan

The Cedar's access programs -- Concerts for Youth, Cedar Outdoors, and our new program, CEDAR Avenue to the Art -- all help more people experience live music! If we can reach our goal of $10,000 for these programs by concert time, we will celebrate with a "free" concert on our patio. To help us reach our goal, and to follow our progress, please donate here.

Tonight's performance will feature popular Americana/roots musicians The Brass Kings, and veena player/singer Nirmala Rajasekar, who will be accompanied by Balaji Chandran playing Ghatam and Sriram Natarajan playing Mridhangam.
