People Get Ready with Prissy Clerks

People Get Ready

On Friday, my last day at CMJ, I hit the jackpot and walked away with something I'll remember for years to come. The band was People Get Ready, but honestly this was more than a band — this was the best mix of performance art and music I've seen in decades. (Bob Boilen, NPR)

Drawing deep inspiration from the world of dance, Brooklyn band People Get Ready produce music full of movement and energy. Their self-titled debut full-length album was released on Brassland in October 2012.

CANCELLED: First Avenue presents Efterklang with Nightlands (at The Cedar)

Efterklang

Forever fascinated by the purest possibilities of sound, since forming in 2001 Efterklang have consistently adjusted their sonic modus operandi to suit very specific inspirations. The results the Danes have produced so far – most notably across three acclaimed albums, 2004’s Tripper, 2007’s Parades and 2010’sMagic Chairs – have each explored different directions, each an end product of remarkably studied songcraft and emotional resonance. But Piramida is perhaps the band’s greatest achievement: an album bringing the outside in, informed by frozen time and the relics humanity leaves in its expanding wake.

Ice Music

Norwegian musician Terje Isungset constructs all of his instruments out of ice for each performance. He performs with a Norwegian singer Mari Kvien Brunvoll and has brought his "Ice Music" concerts to concert venues around the world. Now, in the depths of a Minnesota winter, it is our turn to experience the timeless magic of Ice Music!

Grant Cutler with Anonymous Choir and Zoo Animal

Grant Cutler

Earlier this year, the Minnesota State Arts Board commissioned from Grant Cutler a three-part composition for vocals and electro-acoustic instrumentation, which will premier tonight at this show. Informally, Grant describes it as a "big, new age jam" with projected visuals.

And it has not escaped Grant's notice that, according to some, today brings with it the end of the world... For such an occasion, who better than Zoo Animal and Anonymous Choir to herald the changes? Zoo Animal will be joined by special guest Matt Latterell on guitar.

Low with Germaine Gemberling and Rich Mattson

A special Thanskgiving weekend concert with Duluth trio Low! Appropriately for the season, their most recent album C'mon (Sub Pop) strives to articulate a plea for humanity, decency, and common sense in a world gone mad. According to singer-guitarist Alan Sparhawk, “With the last couple of records, we were grappling with something outside of ourselves. This one feels more like, ‘Well, forget all that. I’m looking in your eyes right now, and we need to figure out how to get through the next moment, together, as human beings.’”

The Cedar and First Avenue present Dan Deacon with Height With Friends, Chester Endersby Gwazda, and Alan Resnick

Dan Deacon: America album cover

Composer Dan Deacon started out as a solo electronic musician, but after doing tours with the Dan Deacon Ensemble, Deacon began to embrace making music with large groups of people. And so for his brand new album America, he resolved to do something he'd never done before: try things out in the studio with different players on different instruments, harnessing community and people power.

Spoek Mathambo with Sound System Sabotage

Father Creeper, the second album by Johannesburg's Spoek Mathambo (real name: Nthato Mokgata), makes the Afro-futurists look old school. Live drumming and rock guitars intertwine with cyborg drum machine beats, video game bleeps, soulful singing and rap choruses. Lyrically, Father Creeper embraces a deep sensitivity for a traumatized society where the turmoil is real, the optimism stubborn and the booty ripe. Father Creeper shows us a musician hitting his stride with the confidence and vision to craft songs as robust and challenging and attractive as life in our electrified, apocalyptic 2012.
