Meklit Hadero with M.anifest

Global Roots Festival 2010 pays tribute to community and a sense of place. The first concert as part of our new community access initiative funded by the Minnesota State Arts Board through "Legacy Amendment" funding will feature Ehiopian-born singer Meklit Hadero, whose sound NPR recently described as "a unique blend of jazz, Ethiopia, artsy San Francisco and visceral poetry." Opening this show will be the Ghanian-born Twin Cities based Hip Hop poet M.anifest, whom the Star Tribune called "a rapper from Ghana who's as smart as Talib Kweli and as funky as Kanye West."

Oreka TX with Portico Quartet

Oreka TX

Global Roots Festival 2010 takes you on a journey of exploration, letting you hear sounds ancient and modern. Tonight, enjoy young British jazzers The Portico Quartet, who feature a very cool sounding, modern steel drum-like instrument called the hang, and a multimedia production by Oreka TX, a Basque Spanish ensemble who play an unusual Basque mallet instrument called the txalaparta. They travelled the world with it seeking unusual musical accompanists and documented their adventure with the film "Nömadak Tx," and for this performance they will project sequences from the film while they play a live score.

Global Roots Festival Special: Buy a Festival Pass for only $49, and gain entry to all four Global Roots Festival 2010 shows! Buy passes from Ticketweb, or the Cedar Ticketline (612-338-2674 ext 2), or from a hard-working Cedar volunteer in the front lobby during shows. Read more »

His repertoire includes pop standards, classical works, film music, and originals--truly something for everyone to enjoy. Don't miss it.

Dan Hicks and The Hot Licks

Dan Hicks

Dan Hicks and the Hot Licks make a return trek to The Cedar in support of Dan's new studio album, Tangled Tales (Surfdog Records). The album is a brand-new collection of compelling and witty tunes that show why Tom Waits called him “fly, sly, wily, and dry!”

In vintage Dan Hicks form, Tangled Tales mashes the outlaw swing music, insightful charm, and brilliant melodies that have endeared him to audiences and fellow artists for four decades with his signature understated melancholy that could only be born from a creative genius. Featuring a world-class collection of musical talent including instrumental virtuosos David Grisman, Charlie Musselwhite, and slide-guitarist Roy Rogers, and produced by Grammy-winning roots music producer Chris Goldsmith, Tangled Tales delivers 8 great new original tunes that feel like instant Dan Hicks classics (and some choice cover tunes too).

Grupo Fantasma with Chico Trujillo

Grupo Fantasma, the funkiest, finest and hardest working Latin orchestra to come out of the United States in the last decade continue their relentless assault of the road.

Kristoff Krane CD release with DJ Pat Morita, Aby Wolf and Fat Kid Wednesdays

Join the party as Kristoff Krane, known for his pleasantly concoctive performances, seemingly effortless vocal improv-skills and eagerness for direct human connection, celebrates the release of his sophomore solo album debut Hunting For Father at The Cedar.  Blending simplistic guitar chords, eerie piano progressions, oddball samples and an amalgam of ambient noise, Krane’s new album is dynamic and moving. His lyrical content retains continuity through an unabashed expression of personal struggle and familiar observations on the world’s hand of chaos and fortune.
