Dan Newton's Cafe Accordion Orchestra CD release with Diane Jarvi and Tony Balluff

Café Accordion Orchestra

Cafe Accordion Orchestra returns to The Cedar for their eighth annual January concert. This time they will be celebrating the release of their ninth full-length album, La Zingara. The concert and album will feature a broad range of sounds from cultures connected to the Gypsy lifestyle, from French Manouche to the Bohemian drifter and
American cowboy. CAO brings with them the two special guests that wowed last years sold-out house, vocalist Diane Jarvi and clarinetist Tony Balluff. Diane has a voice that is amazingly supple with an astonishing dynamic range and quality. Tony has been rocking and swinging concert stages and dance halls for years with his smooth New
Orleans style. Their collaboration with CAO has become a highlight for band and audience members alike.

Firewater with Ani Cordero

Tod A of Firewater, photo by Mujde Capraz

There'll be Firewater in the house tonight, as the collective brings the music from their new album International Orange! to the Cedar's dancefloor. On the album, high-energy Turkish percussion drives jagged guitars and horns on eleven anthems of frustration and hope, movement and transformation. The songs tap into grooves as disparate as Turkish maqsoum, Punjabi bhangra, Jamaican ska, Greek rebetiko, classic punk and old-school mambo. Muskat’s mixing aesthetic draws on everything from the Bollywood excess of ‘60s-era R.D. Burman to the early dub experiments of King Tubby. The new work was produced by Tod A and mixed by Tamir Muskat of Balkan Beat Box…not to be missed!

The Cedar is now air-conditioned for your year-round comfort!

Murzik

After nearly two years of artistic silence, Murzik makes a comeback with their most ambitious release to date, new album A Cat Named Murzik. Spending the past two years on re-evaluating their creative direction, the band finds itself emerging from a contemplative respite armed with new talent and vigor. Originally formed by long-time college friends singer-songwriter Bryan Steenerson and accordionist Nathan Simar, the lineup now includes cellist Ryan Pfeiffer, violinist Christopher Becknell, and drummer Alex Budrow.

Dikanda

Dikanda

The third night of Global Roots Festival 2011 celebrates the music of migrants and travellers.

Dikanda is a young Polish band that plays a mix of traditional East-European and gypsy music, plus their own compositions.

Aar Maanta is a charismatic Somali-born singer who has assembled a multinational band in his new home of London, and has been described by young British Somalis as "the voice of our generation." He takes traditional Somali singing and puts it into a modern, cross-cultural context.
