Big Cats! “For My Mother” album release with K. Raydio and The Chalice

Big Cats! “For My Mother”

Over the past few months, Big Cats! (of The Tribe and Big Cats!) aka Spencer Wirth-Davis wrote a 70's style soul/Rnb record, "For My Mother" along the lines of Marvin Gaye's "What's Going On" and recorded it with a 9 piece band featuring members of No Bird Sing, Alicia Steele and the Endeavors, Heiruspecs, and more. He then sampled from the recordings to create a full length, instrumental hip hop record. All funds for the album were raised through a Kickstarter project that met its goal of $7,000.  All proceeds of the album and a percentage of the release show will be donated to the Minnesota Ovarian Cancer Alliance in honor of his mother, Christi Wirth-Davis, who died from ovarian cancer two years ago.

Also on the bill tonight will be K. Raydio, and the bold women of The Chalice.

The Cedar is now air-conditioned for your year-round comfort!

First Avenue presents Dirty Three with The Cairo Gang (at The Cedar)

Dirty Three by Annabel Mehran

It's been a wicked dry spell of seven years since the filthy unit of Mick Turner, Jim White, and Warren Ellis graced the world with a full-length album of any kind. As individuals, they've had their hands in many different pies between now and then, but nothing comes close to what occurs when the Dirty Three lock themselves in a room with the tape rolling to milk whatever they can out of each other. This time around, they've discovered the heavens and its heat source, birthing to the world a brand-spanking new album and gracefully aiming it straight for that giant orange bulb of the sky . . . they call it Toward The Low Sun and Drag City is proud to have released it.

Matmos and So Percussion

Modern experimentalists Matmos and So Percussion are combining forces for this one-night-only concert on the occasion of the record release of Treasure State, a startling new collaboration. For the past several years, So Percussion has been joining the electronic duo Matmos for shows around the country and in Europe, exploring the sonic and theatrical possibilities of beer cans, hair clippers, ceramic bowls, and dry ice.  "Musique-concrete" oddballs widely known for their collaboration with Bjork, electronic duo Matmos are infamous for turning bizarre sound sources (from plastic surgery to live snails) into shuffling rhythmic pop. Brooklyn-based quartet So Percussion are acclaimed virtuosic performers of classical and avant-garde writing for percussion. Known for playing the music of Steve Reich, David Lang, and Paul Lansky, they are increasingly recognized as composers in their own right.

Laurence Juber with Daniel Volovets

As a young working musician in London, England in the 1970s, Laurence Juber got an extraordinary, life-changing break when Paul McCartney picked him to become Wings’ lead guitarist. Juber spent three years recording and touring with the band. During that time he won a Best Rock Instrumental GRAMMY® for the track "Rockestra" from the Wings album, "Back To The Egg." Read more »
