The Barley Jacks with Brian Wicklund CD release concert
Join The Barley Jacks as they formally release their new CD The Lighthouse. The Barley Jacks sing original vocals and play jaw–dropping instrumentals in a spirit of excitement and fun. They are masters of the fiddle, guitar, bass and drum who meld their divergent backgrounds of blues and bluegrass, classical and Celtic, R & B and bebop to inspire each other and create something entirely new. Front-man and fiddler Brian Wicklund is joined by Joe Cruz–guitar, Kevin Rowe–bass, and Joel Arpin–percussion. Their 2010 recording Either Side of Night has been warmly received by reviewers.

April Verch Band with Roe Family Singers
Experience the joy of Canadian fiddler, singer, songwriter and stepdancer April Verch and her band, as they brighten your winter evening with their foot-stompin' rendition of classic Ottawa Valley and old timey tunes and songs. The twang of the banjo and the driving Franco-Celtic pulse of the fiddle are as ingrained in April as snowbound winters and Saturday dances.
As fellow fiddler Dirk Powell says, “April has an amazing ability to touch people’s hearts, get them having fun, and sharing the whole range of human emotions. She’s a grand master fiddler and a very expressive singer, but what sets her apart is the openness, humor and social fun she got growing up in the music. It's not always easy for professionals to keep that social joy in their music. Even though April is playing at a very high level, she brings that explosive joy with her.”

Frigg with Kaivama
The Cedar welcomes back the Finnish-Norwegian fiddling folksters Frigg, a firm fan favorite from their knockout appearances at Nordic Roots Festivals and on A Prairie Home Companion. With their wall of fiddles, youthful energy, and creative instrumentation that includes a double bass, guitar/dobro, and cittern, Frigg are a force to be reckoned with, and a live "must-see." Opening tonight will be Minnesota Finnish folk fiddle and guitar duo Kaivama.

Brooklyn Rider's most recent recording, Brooklyn Rider plays Philip Glass (released in 2011 on the composer's label, Orange Mountain Music), includes the 5 string quartets of Philip Glass plus the world premiere recording of Suite for String Quartet from "Bent." Referring to Brooklyn Rider’s recording of the 3rd String quartet, The Huffington Post raved: “Brooklyn Rider's interpretation of Glass's tense, melancholic vision is a cathartic and delicate masterpiece.” The evening will present a selection of these works in the intimate environment of The Cedar, including the MN premiere of the Suite from "Bent." CANCELLED: Toumani Diabaté "Ali Farka Touré Variations"
The Cedar advises that due to illness, Toumani Diabaté has been forced to cancel his tour of the USA, including this show at The Cedar. Please consult The Cedar Ticket Refund Policy for ticket refunds.
Ali and Toumani, the second and final collaboration between the late Malian guitarist Ali Farka Touré and kora master Toumani Diabaté, was released earlier this year by Nonesuch to universal acclaim. Now, experience the thrill of hearing Toumani Diabaté live in concert as he performs material from the album along with other music from his extensive back catalog of solo work and collaborations. Toumani will be accompanied by Samba Toure (guitar & voice), Fantamady Diabate (guitar), Mohamed Koita (bass) and Fode Kouyate (drums & calabash). This reduced line-up will both capture the intimacy of his solo and duo recordings, as well as the energy of a Symmetric Orchestra performance. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!
