St. Vincent (10pm at the Walker)
The Walker Art Center and The Cedar co-present St. Vincent in concert at the McGuire Theater, Walker Art Center. St. Vincent, the nom-de-stage of "playful chanteuse [and] fearsome shredder" (NY Times) Annie Clark, releases her third album Strange Mercy (4AD) on Sept 13. The record's 11 new tracks showcase Clark's gift for fusing the cerebral and the visceral, her melodically elegant arrangements packing hefty emotional punches. Strange Mercy finds St. Vincent redefining the idea of the guitar hero, utilizing the instrument as a pointillist artist might wield a brush. Countless judiciously placed riffs and instrumental flares, each distinct and unique, cohere into grand tableaus. On "Cruel," she elicits punchy bursts like an R horn section. "Cheerleader" froths and boils, with deep and fuzzy guitars bubbling up to the surface, while "Surgeon" twirls about endlessly, Clark's vocals dancing amid a blizzard of notes.
Tickets on sale July 19.

Jenny and Johnny featuring Jenny Lewis and Johnathan Rice
Jenny and Johnny first started working together in Los Angeles in 2005, after being introduced by Conor Oberst. Rice had traveled to Nebraska to make his first record before moving to L.A., where Lewis was beginning work with Mike Mogis on her solo debut Rabbit Fur Coat. They both ended up playing on each others recordings, and struck up a lasting creative relationship. Rice joined Lewis’ band for the Rabbit Fur Coat world tour in 2006, and has played live with Lewis at every show of her solo career thus far. Jenny contributed both songwriting and singing to Johnathan’s Further North in 2007, and he was quick to return the favor as one of the producers of Lewis’ album Acid Tongue and again joining her on the road. During the Acid Tongue sessions, the band cut the song “Carpetbaggers” with Elvis Costello. Read more »
First Avenue presents Jamie Lidell
“a neo-psychedelic ode, planting romantic avowals amid arid textures.”
- New York Times
"elegantly warped love songs...(a) blend of creamy come-ons and fuzzy beats"
- Rolling Stone
"A beautifully mixed bag...impassioned and lushly arranged" - Esquire
"It's quite a ride' - Uncut 4/5
'Lidell's previous albums have tried to reconcile his two loves; electronica and classic soul. On Compass, the globe wandering Englishman might have squared the circle'
- Uncut
Jamie Lidell hasn’t stopped moving.
He’s like a shark. Albeit a stone cold funked-up, sonically obsessed, romantically soulful killer shark. And he isn’t going to stop. No, he won’t stop. Please don’t ask him to. Just get out of the way, enjoy the spectacle and the soundtrack.
Balkan Beat Box
Balkan Beat Box is centered around its two founders: saxophone player Ori Kaplan and drummer/programmer/producer Tamir Muskat. After having been active for over a decade in some of NYC's premier underground bands (including Gogol Bordello, Firewater, Big Lazy, Shotnez), they joined forces with charismatic MC Tomer Yosef and brought together their combined experiences and ideas to create the powerhouse called Balkan Beat Box. Welcome BBB back to The Cedar as they play tracks from their brand new album Blue Eyed Black Boy (out April 27). One of the most energetic bands The Cedar has ever hosted...absolutely not to be missed!
Tickets are on sale now from the Cedar Ticketline (612-338-2674 ext 2), Cedar outlets, and online at Ticketweb.
Standing room only.
Please note: this show was originally scheduled for June 4. If you bought tickets from that show, you will be able to use them for this rescheduled date.
