Colin Hay's last show at The Cedar in May 2008 was so hugely entertaining we're bringing him back for a two night run! While his voice and visage are still familiar to millions from his tenure as frontman, principal songwriter, and lead vocalist of pop sensations Men at Work (“Down Under,” “Overkill,” “Who Can It Be Now?”), Colin's more recent work has taken him in new directions, with some acclaimed solo albums (most recently the September 2009 release American Sunshine), and the frequent use of his music on soundtracks – such as the hit television show Scrubs (on which he has also had several cameos) and the sleeper-hit soundtrack to the film Garden State. Colin's slightly quizzical, curious, cynical yet open-hearted disposition, and his talent for hilarious between song banter has endeared him to his many fans.
American Sunshine finds Hay reaching a new pinnacle in his storied career -- his songwriting honed by discipline and experience, his unmistakable voice sharpened by a seemingly unending run of sold-out performances both solo and with his band. Noticeably reinvigorated, American Sunshine is a collection of new songs boasting the timeless melodic grace and lyrical wit long associated with Hay, magnified by dynamic, uncluttered performances.
“Although I’m not technically an American citizen, I’ve been living here for twenty years,” reflects Colin Hay from his home in California. “I like it here. You look up at the sky, and there’s no evidence of anything. It’s amazing to think that, under that sky, there is so much horror going on here…but it’s so beautiful at the same time.” American Sunshine is marked by several sideways glances at the American dream – that perilous balance between potential and reality – along with knowing ruminations on the transformative effects of love and the passing of time, set to some of the purest pop, hardest rock, and most emotionally bare acoustic balladry Hay has yet laid down. American Sunshine marks the welcome return of an iconic pop underdog, in peak form.
