Blackout!
Blackout!
In an event called Blackout: Representation for Empowerment, local Twin Cities arts of color in an era of black media and public surveillance are drawing light to issues in the Twin Cities black community. With documentaries like 13th by Director Ava DuVernary documenting mass incarcernation and the evolution of moderan day slavery. With the election of Donald Trump and over 3,000+ protestors in Minneapolis alone chanting #notmypresident, representation and visibility for POC individuals is incredibly essential. This is a showcase is centered around the positive representation of black and brown musicians in the RNB, hip hop, and jazz Twin Cities music scene.

To kick-off the series, this event will feature artists Joe Davis & The Poetic Diaspora, Nick Jordan, and Destiny Roberts at The Cedar Cultural Center.
Joe Davis & The Poetic Diaspora
Joe Davis & The Poetic Diaspora
Journeying through the sonically diverse realms of old school and new school hip hop, R&B, funk, and soul, Joe Davis & The Poetic Diaspora seamlessly blend melodic instrumentation with raw, poetic energy to tell stories of struggle, resilience, and celebration. Formed in the heart of the Twin Cities, Minnesota, the collective is dedicated to crafting vibrant soundscapes around honest narratives that reflect their community's sacred humanity. Each song is an ancestral echo, a battle cry calling for freedom, an unending dance for justice and joy, welcoming all of the diaspora home.
Nick Jordan
Nick Jordan
Nick Jordan is a fresh-faced R&B act based out of the Twin Cities. His debut EP, NJ, is described by Sarah Stanley-Ayre of City Pages Minneapolis as a "seven-track saunter of soul seen through young yet retrospective eyes."

NJ is a true ode to Jordan's musical upbringing, and incorporates elements of funk, garage, future soul, and R&B. Every song on the project was written and arranged by Jordan, with the production brought to life alongside Lunar Bedrooms frontman Luke Darger (moonsidr_dlux).

What really sets Jordan apart from the pack is the quality and care he puts into his live show, which draws on his strengths as both a musician and a mover. During the creative process for NJ, Jordan dove into the world of dance and movement: a skill that he is conscious to incorporate into his live performances. An NJ show is interactive and stimulating, leaving the audience in awe of the multidisciplinary, well-rehearsed production. Truly, it is something that can be better experienced than explained. "Come and be about it, 'bout it..."
Destiny Roberts
Destiny Roberts
Destiny Roberts is a female emcee, entrepreneur with a product line that empowers the black community through the queendom and kingdom alike. Her recent album, Just A Reminder, has social commentary on police brutality, filmed by boyfriend Brian Few Jr. along with her song, "Glow" which embraces female empowerment and the beautiful uplifting of one's melanin.
