A rare treat is in store for denizens of the Twin Cities – a confluence of Kabir’s mystic poetry with the soundscape of India’s semi-classical music on Aug 6 at 7:30PM. Acclaimed Hindustani (North Indian classical) vocalist, Dr. Pooja Goswami Pavan, will be presenting “Songs of Kabir”. She will be accompanied on the Tabla by her husband and musical partner, Dr. A. Pavan, on the Harmonium by Dr. Kedar Naphade and on the Dholak by Abhinav Sharma.

A special feature will be live interpretation of Kabir’s poetry by the renowned Kabir scholar, Dr. Linda Hess. Prof. Linda Hess is a faculty in the Dept. of Religious Studies at Stanford University and is well known for her body of work on Kabir’s poetry, having worked on a number of literary and film projects on the subject.

Kabir was an iconoclastic Indian poet-saint whose poetry is one for the ages; it is just as relevant today as it was in the 15th century, for the universal message of love it espouses. Kabir’s poetry is both, ethereal and earthy at the same time, has greatly influenced the Bhakti and Sufi movements alike in India, while expressing some of life’s most profound truths in pithy, yet sublime and evocative language.
