"Progressive jazz for a safer America..." Formed in 1996 in Minneapolis, members of the band are David King (drums), Michael Lewis (saxophones) and Erik Fratzke (electric bass).
All three members compose music for the group; which places equal emphasis on improvisation. Happy Apple plays a unique brand of jazz music, drawing on several other genres; the group's members play in other bands ranging from indie rock and heavy metal to free jazz and electronic. The best known of these is The Bad Plus, in which King also plays drums.

Two women with big voices making large waves in the music world, one from Israel via Paris and New York, the other from Minnesota via Tennessee and Montana, converging on The Cedar for a magical night of songs that straddle landscapes both cosmopolitan and rural, exotic and down-home, emotional and earthy.
Keren Ann is a recording artist/singer/songwriter/producer based largely in Paris, New York and Israel. She plays guitar, piano and clarinet and engineers and writes choir and musical arrangements. In 2000 she began her solo career with La Biographie de Luka Philipsen — written with and produced by Benjamin Biolay, who also co-wrote and produced its follow-up, La Disparation (in return, she helped write his debut album, Rose Kennedy). The pair also wrote several songs for Henri Salvador's best-selling, prize-winning 2000 comeback album, Chambre avec Vue, including the hit "Jardin d'Hiver". Her third album Not Going Anywhere was released worldwide 2003, but her American breakthrough came with its follow-up, Nolita (2004). Recorded in Paris and New York — it is named for Nolita, her neighborhood in lower Manhattan — it is sung half in French and half in English Keren Ann's fifth solo album, the eponymous Keren Ann, will be released April 23rd, 2007 in Europe, and May 8, 2007 in the United States.

The Bobs are the prevailing trailblazers in the flourishing world of contemporary a cappella music, clear-cutting their own musical freeway. They are among the elite handful of totally original creators, who use just their voices and body percussion to fill a room with an orchestra of harmonious sound.

Equally conversant in traditional roots music, classical forms and jazz improvisation, the Orange Mighty Trio delves into mostly original material, sprinkled with a few fiddle tunes and other favorites. This adventurous cross-pollination on violin (Zack Kline--also of Piper's Crow), piano (Mike Vasich) and bass (Nick Gaudette) creates a unique crossover ensemble with a wide range-- a contemporary chamber-music-fiddle-band, you might say. Joining Orange Mighty Trio for the evening are Michael Rossetto &
Nicholas Lemme from Spaghetti Western String Co. and sweet harmonizing
old-time country duo The Get Up Johns! CITY PAGES A-LIST PICK!

At age 25, mandolinist Chris Thile (BBC's Folk Musician of the Year 2007) has accomplished more than most -- 2 million albums sold with Grammy-winning Nickel Creek, six solo albums and a side career as an in-demand studio musician. But ultimately, moving to New York was the catalyst that inspired Chris to form his new-generation band to perform a mix of original compositions and inventive takes from disparate sources such as The White Stripes, The Strokes, Jimmie Rodgers, and Gillian Welch as heard on his new recording How To Grow A Woman From The Ground. The band of acoustic/bluegrass heavyweights will feature 2007 Grammy-winning guitarist Bryan Sutton. With Nickel Creek going on indefinite hiatus, now is the ideal time to check out Chris Thile's next big thing--and a perfect Father's Day treat to boot!

Whether it be due to an isolated island environment promoting evolution of new and unique musical forms derived from hybridization of African and Portuguese influences, or merely “something in the water”, there is no escaping the fact that the people of the Cape Verde islands have made a disproportionate contribution to World music. Following hot on the trail of the “barefoot diva” Cesaria Evora, and the alluring Lura comes the newest sensational Cape Verdean musical export: Tcheka! Tcheka is well-known in Praia (the Cape Verde capital) for his work in modernising "batuque", one of Santiago Island’s more popular beats, originally played by women. He also penned the opening and closing songs on Lura's debut album, and is making his deserved entrance onto the stages of the world, already heralded as a dynamic and passionate performer.

Celebrate summer with the sizzling Tel Aviv surf guitar and tuba band Boom Pam! While surf guitar seems irrevocably associated with Dick Dale and California in the 50's and 60's, it is less well known that Dick Dale was born to a Lebanese father, and incorporated many Middle Eastern influences into his early work. Boom Pam now brings the music back from the Middle East--new sounds yet familiar, and very danceable!

Rob Curto's Forró For All: a band dedicated to the sound of Northeastern Brazil’s “forró pé de serra”, performed with a sensibility born of New York City’s diverse and dynamic musical culture. Forró is both a musical genre and an event. In Northeastern Brazil a forró party unites communities and generations, with couples young and old dancing to accordion, zabumba and triangle. This collective celebration is a creative response to the difficulties of life in the Northeast and an expression of fantastic musical intelligence and wit. Forró For All’s founding member, Rob Curto, is a musician who both respects and transcends idioms, mixing elements of jazz with a language and feel that is distinctly Brazilian. At times his playing betrays a passion for rock and North American popular music of all kinds, showing always a great love for the bellows, buttons and keys of the accordion, the principal instrument of forró.

Robert Rich's music creates a world of primordial mystery and intense beauty. Electronics merge seamlessly with primitive instruments in lush atmospheres. Above it all float melodies played on bamboo flute and steel guitar. With the fabric of this hypnotic journey, Rich weaves a connection between human cultures both past and present, near and far. With over two dozen albums, Robert Rich has helped define the genres of ambient music, dark-ambient, tribal and trance, yet his music remains hard to categorize. Part of his unique sound comes from using home-made acoustic and electronic instruments, microtonal tunings, computer-based signal processing, chaotic systems and feedback networks. Don't miss this rare opportunity to catch Robert live, with a gorgeous backdrop presentation of Daniel Colvin's computer-generated movie Atlas Dei!

Austin-based LaFave is one of an increasing number of modern rock troubadours from the southern Plains - but it is the strength of his live shows that make him one of the very best. His songs are reminiscent of the Dust Bowl heritage of fellow Oklahoman Woody Guthrie, the quiet folk reflections of Bob Dylan, and the rock anthems of Bruce
Springsteen. His latest release, Cimarron Manifesto, just out on Red House Records and currently sitting at #1 on the Americana Music Association album charts, features a typically strong blend of poignant songs from LaFave's pen, along with covers of Donovan, Dylan and Joe South. He'll be appearing at The Cedar with a three-piece band, including ace guitarist (and long-time Tom Russell compadré) Andrew Hardin. CITY PAGES A-LIST PICK!

Tortoise's almost entirely instrumental music defies easy categorization, variously described as art-rock or math-rock. The members have roots in Chicago's fertile music scene, playing in various indie rock and punk groups. Tortoise was among the first American indie rock bands to incorporate
styles closer to Krautrock, dub, minimalism, electronica and various
jazz styles, rather than the standard rock and roll and punk that had
dominated indie rock for years. Fellow Chicagoans Make Believe, featuring Tim Kinsella (CAP'N JAZZ, OWLS, Joan of Arc), will open. CITY PAGES A-LIST PICK!

Eleven years ago, several Cedar volunteers wanted to help end the season with an all day concert and dance party that was also a fundraiser for the Cedar. A glorious time was had by all. This year's Grateful for The Cedar, with a line-up that conjures up the spirit of the original event , is sure to please. All of these musicians value The Cedar stage as a place to stretch out and get comfortable, then take their music to new heights. We'll start early and finish late as we wrap up the 2006--2007 season and bring on the summertime!
