Ralph's WorldThese days there may be lots of rockers making kid-friendly records, but there’s only one Ralph Covert, an irrepressibly enthusiastic performer who rocks just as hard for kids as he does for grown-ups. Perma-grin on his face, lime-green Chuck Taylors on his feet—even at the Grammies! —his traveling circus of catchiness known as Ralph’s World is equally loved by cool-seeking parents as it is by children, fortunate to be living in an era where their music both rocks and respects their intelligence and curiosity.

BaBa ZuLa: Photo by Alexander HackeBy mixing oriental instruments such as the darbuka, electric saz, and spoons with electronics and modern sounds, Turkish alternative music group BaBa ZuLa creates a sound all their own called "Oriental Dub". While a ney can represent the past Sufi-Islamic tradition, and a clarinet is the symbol of the music of the Turkish gypsies-an electric saz together with a wooden spoon can serve as musical compass to Turkish musical roots going as far back as pre-Islamic, shamanic times, through Anatolia reaches all the way up to present-day Istanbul. Despite sounds that might initially come to mind when one hears the phrase "Oriental Dub", Baba ZuLa’s music is in fact rock’n roll that rolls in a way that westerners haven’t heard since the late ’60s rock era. Baba ZuLa share their legacy through their music, a music born out of Istanbul and influenced by the memories of Istanbul passed on to them from generations past.

Music Starts:8:00 pm
Annbjørg Lien and Bruce Molsky of Waltz With Me VasenKicking off the Nordic Roots Festival this year will be favorites and good friends of The Cedar, Väsen, and a new project conceived by Annbjørg Lien, Waltz With Me.
Waltz With Me is an unusual string quartet project, informed by ancient traditions, but novel. Norwegian leader/composer Annbjørg Lien is a virtuoso of the Hardanger fiddle. Mats Edén (of Groupa) plays fiddle. Cellist Christine Hanson is from Canada, but lives in Scotland. Bruce Molsky is a master of North American ‘ole-timey’ fiddle music.. and many other things besides. Here, he plays American and Scandinavian fiddles and guitar. Bruce also sings.
Väsen is a unique acoustic ensemble that transcends barriers and delight listeners with their music based in the rural Swedish tradition, delivered impeccably with a contemporary flavor.

Please join us for the tenth and final annual Nordic Roots Festival. Artists scheduled to perform in 2008 include many of the artists who have transformed this weekend into an annual pilgrimage of Nordic bliss for so many people: Väsen, Hedningarna, Detektivbyrån, Triakel, Frigg, Waltz With Me featuring Annbjørg Lien and Bruce Molsky, Hoven Droven and Hurdy Gurdy.
Music Starts:2:00 pm
TriakelTriakel consists of Emma Härdelin, vocals, Kjell-Erik Eriksson, fiddle and Janne Strömstedt, harmonium. All three are well-established in the forefront of Swedish folkmusic. Emma and Kjell-Erik are also active in the groups Garmarna and Hoven Droven.
Triakel began life as a New Year resolution. After a party together Kjell-Erik and Janne honoured their agreement to perform together on harmonium and fiddle in December 1994. It was a success, and they were keen to follow it up. When Emma Härdelin added her voice to the duo the group was complete. During the past few years the group has toured throughout Sweden and also played in about fifteen different European countries. They have also appeared in Japan and several times in the Unites States and Canada.
Music Starts:8:00 pm
Hedningarna DetektivbyrånHedningarna's world is a place where primall folk music collides with sampling and programming, forging a new direction.
Hedningarna, "the heathens" in English, drive ancient Nordic music into the modern era paying no attention to the rules of the road.
Their newly created tunes are an extension of the living tradition inspired by the melodies of their forebears. The intensity of modern technology mixed with the flavor of ancient instruments and tunes creates the explosive, intense sound of Hedningarna.
Detektivbyrån joins Hedningarna this evening. Detektivbyrån, also referred to as DBY, is a three piece band from Sweden, with a strong emphasis on glockenspiel and accordion. Since 2005 they have performed their melody driven pling-plong tunes. Detektivbyrån is glockenspiel ´n´ accordion on top of fuzzy
beats, swinging hugs and sweet respect. Detektivbyrån is as honest as it's possible to be nowadays.

Frigg...Frigg banishes the darkness with a series of bright, smiling instrumentals. (Michael Toland, High Bias)
Frigg is a multitalented Finnish-Norwegian seven who produce fresh
Scandinavian folk fiddling accompanied by fretted instruments, upright
bass and endless energy. The style they represent is a mixture of
Kaustinen (Finland) and Nord-Trondelag (Norway) -- traditions flavored
with a taste of Americana and irish folk music.
Frigg was chosen as "The Band Of The Year" at Kaustinen Folk Music Festival in 2003, and they have been exuberantly received on A Prairie Home Companion radio show.
Tickets are $15 advance or $18 day of show.

Hoven Droven Hurdy GurdyHoven Droven is a Swedish folk rock band founded in 1989. They specialize in instrumental, hard rock arrangements of old Swedish folk tunes. The closest English translation of "Hoven Droven" is "helter skelter" or "whatever."
Their 2005 album "Jumping at the Cedar" was nominated for a 2007 Swedish Grammy award in the folk music category.
Hurdy Gurdy: Exclusively using sounds generated from hurdy gurdys, Stefan Brisland-Ferner of Garmarna and Totte Mattsson of Hedningarna play, process, sample, and tweak both traditional and original tunes in innovative and provocative ways. Their music demonstrates the range and power of this ancient instrument, which has been dubbed a “medieval synthesizer.”

La MusgañaTake the traditional music of Spain, dance tunes, love songs, music for rituals such as weddings and village celebrations, perform it on the traditional instruments — bagpipes, wooden flutes., zanfona (hurdy-gurdy)..., then add something contemporary with accordion, guitar, fiddle and clarinets. This is the sound of La Musgaña (pronounced La Moos-gahn-yah). Except that you haven't taken into consideration the basic verve and energy of the band.

Natalia Zukerman and Willy PorterAn evening of inspired guitar, singing and songwriting from two of the best artists of the craft, Willy Porter and Natalia Zukerman. Each night, Willy Porter clearly showcases his mastery of the acoustic guitar in his most comfortable environment—his live show. He continues to stretch each show by morphing performance art, live audio looping, and improvisational sketch comedy into his solo whistle stops. Each tour date becomes a unique event, a musical experience much greater than just a review of past, present and future recorded work. Ian Anderson of Jethro Tull, recently described Porter’s musicianship this way: “Willy Porter’s music demonstrates admirably that the technical excellence of his guitar-playing will never overwhelm the essence of the song itself. In perfect symbiosis, the disciplines of performance and songwriting combine together to create the unique work for which he is admired by professional peers and audiences alike. Oh – and a damn fine singer too. Thank goodness he doesn’t play the flute.”

PiperlinkA Multi-Media Performance--All you ever needed to know about The Irish Uilleann Pipes!
The uilleann pipes have become the iconic instrument in Irish music. With their unique tone and rich complexity, the pipes have had a profound influence on Ireland’s musical heritage. The legacy of the master pipers of the past and the sound of the pipes themselves continue to shape the evolution of Irish traditional music. But what do we really know about this mysterious and fascinating instrument? How often do we hear a listener say 'I really love the uilleann pipes' without knowing that much about them? The instrument has been central to so much well-known and popular Irish music, from The Chieftains to Planxty to Riverdance: why? How do they work? Are they really Irish? And why, if more conventional instruments like the flute, the fiddle, and the accordion abound, do the pipes have such a profound influence on traditional music?

The Magnetic FieldsA rare Twin Cities stop on a very limited U.S. tour by the Magnetic Fields, led by New York City singer songwriter Stephin Merritt. Critically hailed as one of the most significant indie pop bands of the last two decades, the Magnetic Fields has built a rabid following for its personal yet poppy dance/noise/synth sound underlying literate lyrics that are ironic, bittersweet, and bitingly humorous. This acoustic evening features songs from the band’s latest release, Distortion, as well as music from their influential 1999 triple album 69 Love Songs, called “an essential guide to loving music” by the Guardian of London.
Music Starts:8:00 pm
SolasFor over a decade, Solas has been hailed as the leading Irish-American supergroup. Through line-up changes and experiments with style and technology, the band has pushed the boundaries of—but never strayed too far from—their Irish roots.
Now, as Máiréad Phelan, an exciting young singer from Kilkenny, steps up to lend her exquisite vocals to the existing line up of Seamus Egan (flute, tenor banjo, mandolin, whistle, guitar, and bodhran), Winifred Horan (fiddle), Mick McAuley (accordion and concertina) and Eamon McElholm (guitar and keyboards), the band heads into their second decade of playing tight, fiery Irish music with a new tour and a new CD, For Love and Laughter. The new album breaks fresh ground in duets with Canada’s folk phenoms The Duhks, contributions from Cedar regulars cellist Natalie Haas and Dirk Powell, and an inspired rendition of Rickie Lee Jones’s “Sailor Song,” while it offers the imaginative reinterpretations of traditional material that Solas has been playing to the delight of their fans worldwide.

Josh RouseMelodic indie pop singer-songwriter Josh Rouse made a name for himself and earned a passionate following with a string of critically-acclaimed CDs, including Under Cold Blue Stars, 1972, and Nashville, ultimately inspired by what Rouse calls his favorite genre of music: 70's singer/songwriter. His most recent full-length album Country Mouse, City House was recorded in Spain (where Rouse has made his home since 2006), and according to Rouse, covers themes of "death, isolation, nature, religion, and dreaming." Obviously not one to avoid tackling the big issues, Rouse is an artist well worth hearing, and The Cedar's intimate space will be an ideal listening environment.

Liz CarrollAs a female, American-born fiddler who insists on honing an expansive repertoire of original tunes, Liz Carroll has become a revered figure in traditional Irish music despite what many on the scene consider three strikes against her. In an art form long dominated by men, she's an instrumentalist with such technical poise and unbridled energy that her concerts are thrill-inducing affairs. In a field where a player's sound is often defined by his county of origin in Ireland, Carroll, the child of Irish immigrants, is a product of Chicago's vibrant Celtic music scene. But her most unlikely achievement might well be that Carroll has composed more than a dozen tunes that have become standards among her peers.

Melissa FerrickBoston singer-songwriter Melissa Ferrick has the kind of relationship with her audience that few artists are blessed with. Her live performance is fierce and funny, outspoken and vulnerable, passionate and real. The emotional honesty of Ferrick’s first-person lyrics, the force of her vocal delivery and the disciplined fury of her musicianship connects her to her audience with confidence and grace. She’s been gaining fans since her first release at age 22 on Atlantic Records. Her next three recordings were released by indie label What Are Records. In 2000, Melissa launched her own label: Right On Records. Her 2006 release In the Eyes of Strangers marked the label’s sixth release. As if in acknowledgment of the passing years, even though her formidable energy be undiminished, Melissa's new album due out in September is entitled Goodbye Youth.
Openers will be acoustic alt-folk duo Coyote Grace. As their website succinctly puts is: Girl meets Girl. Girl becomes Boy. Girl and Boy become a band. Their songs weave a curious tapestry conveying themes of transformation, introspection, and the impermanence of identity.

Crooked StillFans of Crooked Still who came to their stunning sold out Cedar show in Mar 2007 or one of their insanely popular shows at Winnipeg Folk Festival over the past two years will notice a change: cellist Rushad Eggleston left the group in November of 2007. The group has now become five with the addition of fiddler Brittany Haas and Tristan Clarridge on cello and second fiddle. Lead vocalist Aoife O’Donovan told No Depression magazine, “When you’re in a quartet, and one of your members who’s been a huge creative part of your sound decides to leave, it definitely crosses your mind to just not do it. But we had spent five years building a name for ourselves. And if you look at almost every band that’s successful, there’s been line-up changes.” If Still Crooked, the first album from the new line-up, is any indication, success for this young band will be explosive. Crooked Still continues to perform one of the most compelling forms of alternative bluegrass and string band music today.

Hayes CarllIf you haven’t already heard of Texas troubadour Hayes Carll, you soon will. In the three years since his self-released second album, Little Rock became available, Carll has toured relentlessly in North America and abroad, founded a successful singer-songwriter music festival on the Gulf Coast of Texas, secured a record deal with Lost Highway Records, and has even seen Little Rock become the first self-released album to reach #1 on the Americana Music Chart. He’s only getting started.
On his new album, Trouble In Mind, the 32 year-old Carll navigates his way through both stormy weather and calm, sun-drenched waters with ease, emerging with songs that melt even the hardest heart in town or heat up a roadhouse. Their impact is heightened by the fact that they're songs born of both immersion in the works of his songwriting heroes and plenty of real world experience.

Toumani DiabatéThose fascinated by the question of the role of genetics and environment in determining the destiny of musicians (Loudon Wainwright/Kate McGarrigle, and Rufus/Martha Wainwright, Johnny and Rosanne Cash, Bob and Jakob Dylan), to name just a few) would do well to ponder the pedigree of Malian kora player Toumani Diabaté: he is descended from 71 generations of kora players, transmitted without interruption from father to son! With that kind of bloodline and a lifetime of playing under his belt, it is understandable that Toumani Diabaté is the undisputed master of the instrument, a highly versatile form of 21-stringed harp fashioned from a gourd. Diabaté’s first solo recording in 20 years, The Mandé Variations (Nonesuch), is a stunningly beautiful, immediately accessible blend of traditional melodies, original compositions and breathtaking improvisations. ‘The Mandé Variations’ is probably the most ambitious and challenging
African instrumental album yet released. It is at once the definitive
statement on where the kora is today and simply one of the most
beautiful and melodically accessible albums you will hear this year. An
important album for Africa, an important album for the world.

Pine Leaf Boys"The live performances of the Pine Leaf Boys are a revelation of anarchy and reverence and manic exuberance funneled through traditional musical forms. Imagine a wide river, storm-tossed and swollen with rain, staying within the banks but cutting a deep channel. Or, imagine a vintage tube amplifier driven to its electrical limit. A Pine Leaf performance is like that. Full-throttle and wide open, The Pine Leaf Boys heat the tubes of the old music until they break up into the sweetest distortion imaginable. " - Joshua Caffery

These chants are serious business, and are not intended for casual entertainment, but are described by some as the holiest sounds ever heard. The evening will open with a display of Tibetan dancers.

Haley BonarTwo of The Cedar's most popular local indie acts in one night: songstress Haley Bonar, riding an upwards trajectory across the country with the release of her somewhat ambiguously titled album Big Star; and The Owls, like their namesake, light on the wing and airy, with an instantly recognizable sound all their own, and more than a hint of wisdom in their songs.

The Infamous StringdustersThe Infamous Stringdusters are the new vanguard of acoustic music. Well crafted songs, vivid arrangements, instrumental virtuosity, stunning improvisation, unique individuality and complete harmony… Bluegrass, Rock, Country, Blues, Folk, and Jazz, the “IS” is American Acoustic Music.
When The Infamous Stringdusters was released in June by Sugar Hill Records, some assumed from the title that it was a debut recording. Those already aware of the Stringdusters phenomenon will know differently: that 2007's Fork in the Road was the album that boldly introduced this daring, disciplined band to the world of bluegrass and a wider world of music enthusiasts who heard it and decided: 'if that's bluegrass, then I love bluegrass.' Fork in the Road was named Album of the Year by the International Bluegrass Music Association. Its title track was named Song of the Year, and the band itself earned the honor of best emerging artist in a competitive field. It was a stunning cap to an amazing 2007.

Michael MonroeStraight from the North Woods, Michael Monroe's original music and compelling energy mesmerize his audiences as he blends his rich vocals, guitar, bamboo and glass flutes with his "live" layering/looping technique, combining musical styles of gentle acoustic folk and jazzy reggae. Tonight, he'll be honoring the winter season with songs from his most recent recording Wintersongs, described by City Page's Rick Mason as "a collection as warm and full of sparkling light as a roaring fire guarding against an arctic gale. Graced with a dark-toned mellifluous voice, Monroe etches immutable images of north woods winter, interlacing his songs with vivid instrumentals featuring his limpid guitar and scampering flutes".
