My Brightest Diamond

Her otherworldly, Kate Bush-meets-PJ Harvey voice is challenging but ultimately riveting, and her ambient string orchestration merits comparison to Andrew Bird and Joanna Newsom. The best way to experience Worden is in person in an intimate, acoustically divine room. (Chris Riemenschneider, Vita.MN)

Toumani DiabatéToumani DiabatéThose fascinated by the question of the role of genetics and environment in determining the destiny of musicians (Loudon Wainwright/Kate McGarrigle, and Rufus/Martha Wainwright, Johnny and Rosanne Cash, Bob and Jakob Dylan), to name just a few) would do well to ponder the pedigree of Malian kora player Toumani Diabaté: he is descended from 71 generations of kora players, transmitted without interruption from father to son! With that kind of bloodline and a lifetime of playing under his belt, it is understandable that Toumani Diabaté is the undisputed master of the instrument, a highly versatile form of 21-stringed harp fashioned from a gourd.  Diabaté’s first solo recording in 20 years, The Mandé Variations (Nonesuch), is a stunningly beautiful, immediately accessible blend of traditional melodies, original compositions and breathtaking improvisations. ‘The Mandé Variations’ is probably the most ambitious and challenging
African instrumental album yet released. It is at once the definitive statement on where the kora is today and simply one of the most beautiful and melodically accessible albums you will hear this year. An important album for Africa, an important album for the world.

Bill Mike Band, photo by Joe JohnsonTHE TRUCE MANIFESTO: Partisan politics and the vilification of those who don't agree with your way of thinking -- us vs. them, red vs. blue, my way or the highway -- threatens to overwhelm in the elections of the 2000's. So much so, that many Americans have asked the question, will we ever find common ground in our nation?  But The Bill Mike Band, which is comprised of both liberal Democrats and conservative Republicans, proves that both belief systems can co-exist when the energy is put forth to accept and learn about the other, demonstrated by the release of their sophomore effort Truce.

Pine Leaf BoysGENUINE CAJUN DANCE WITH FREE DANCE LESSON BY DAVID JORDAHL BEFORE THE SHOW, 7.30PM! The Pine Leaf Boys are back in town, with a brand new album Homage au Passé! "The live performances of the Pine Leaf Boys are a revelation of anarchy and reverence and manic exuberance funneled through traditional musical forms. Imagine a wide river, storm-tossed and swollen with rain, staying within the banks but cutting a deep channel. Or, imagine a vintage tube amplifier driven to its electrical limit. A Pine Leaf performance is like that. Full-throttle and wide open, The Pine Leaf Boys heat the tubes of the old music until they break up into the sweetest distortion imaginable. " - Joshua Caffery

Gyuto MonksGyuto MonksThe Gyuto Monks have been chanting since the founding of the Gyuto Tantric University in 1474. The Monks chant to visualize themselves as Buddhas in order to reach enlightenment sooner, or chant to invoke the blessing of the Lord of Transcendent Wisdom, they even chant to pacify the 80,000 kinds of demonic obstructers – their intent is to free humankind from disturbing and harmful situations and create abundant harmony. These chants are serious business, and are not intended for casual entertainment, but are described by some as the holiest sounds ever heard. The evening will open with a display of Tibetan dancers. THE CHAI WILL BE HOT, SWEET AND GOOD; THE CHANTING EXTRAORDINARY!

J. D. SoutherOne of the principal architects of the Southern California country-rock sound, J.D. Souther famously played a key role in the formation of the Eagles and co-wrote their hits “Heartache Tonight,” “Victim of Love,” “New Kid In Town,” and “Best of My Love,” as well as writing Linda Ronstadt’s classics “Faithless Love,” “Simple Man, Simple Dream,” and Prisoner in Disguise.” A highly sought-after songwriter and session man, Souther also released three critically acclaimed solo albums -- “John David Souther,” (1972) “Black Rose,” (1976), and “You’re Only Lonely” (1979) -- and two albums as a member of The Souther Hillman Furay Band, the supergroup which united Souther with Poco’s Richie Furay and the Byrds’ Chris Hillman.

But in 1985, after countless hit records, Grammy nominations, American Music Awards, and gold and platinum albums, J.D. Souther decided to walk away from his solo career. According to Souther: “I just wanted to be a good songwriter. I wanted to just stay home and write.”

Relocating to Nashville, Souther wrote for and with artists as diverse as India.Arie, Brooks & Dunn, Jimmy Buffet, Glen Campbell, Joe Cocker, Crosby Stills & Nash, Diamond Rio, Dixie Chicks, Don Henley, One Flew South, Roy Orbison, Bernadette Peters, Bonnie Raitt, George Strait, Brian Wilson, Trisha Yearwood, Warren Zevon, and most recently the newly re-formed Eagles, who chose Souther’s protest song “How Long” as the debut single from their first studio album in twenty-eight years.

And now, Souther returns with his first studio album of new material in twenty-five years: If The World Was You.

Happy AppleAs Ben Ratliff, writing in the New York Times earlier this year, describes the band "David King, the drummer of the trio Happy Apple, is a heavy-gauge clown, honest, graceful and intuitive. He looks as if he’s constantly subverting his own nature around the drums. His body language says he’s going to cream them, really boss them around, but at the last instant he hesitates, hitting lightly or leaving a blank. Meanwhile the long-haired saxophonist Michael Lewis just blows and blows, a jazz musician in love with long-form improvising and the infinitely changeable melody. Erik Fratzke plays an electric bass, walking and chording, laying out theme and variations with a shortened, muffled tone.

Song titles include "The Alphabutt Song," "Seven Hungry Tigers," "Little Monster Babies," "Wiggle My Tooth" and "Pee Pee in the Potty." Kimya is the proud parent of a bouncy two-year old girl named Panda.

Infamous StringdustersThe Infamous Stringdusters are the new vanguard of acoustic music. Well crafted songs, vivid arrangements, instrumental virtuosity, stunning improvisation, unique individuality and complete harmony… Bluegrass, Rock, Country, Blues, Folk, and Jazz, the “IS” is American Acoustic Music.

When The Infamous Stringdusters was released in June by Sugar Hill Records, some assumed from the title that it was a debut recording. Those already aware of the Stringdusters phenomenon will know differently: that 2007's Fork in the Road was the album that boldly introduced this daring, disciplined band to the world of bluegrass and a wider world of music enthusiasts who heard it and decided: 'if that's bluegrass, then I love bluegrass.' Fork in the Road was named Album of the Year by the International Bluegrass Music Association. Its title track was named Song of the Year, and the band itself earned the honor of Best Emerging Artist in a competitive field. It was a stunning cap to an amazing 2007.

He moved his solar MisTree Studio to his Grand Marais Log Cabin where he and long time partner Deb Mueller (now husband and wife)  host a monthly Log Cabin Concert Series in their home.

From Vinyl to digital, performing his original music Monroe blends rich vocals, guitars, bamboo and glass flutes together... music and technology working together powered by creativity. He recycles his music LIVE on stage to deliver a powerful style of acoustic folk, reggae, and jazz.  His award winning soundtrack is featured on PBS in the documentary "Chased By the Light" and he received a regional Emmy for his "Soaring On Mended Wings". "an effervescent collage of samba, airy folk, and sheer mysticism" (Spin Magazine)

Kassin + 2 is the new portrait of Rio’s rich musical, cultural and ethnic diversity.
