Karan CaseyKaran CaseyOne of the most influential – and most imitated – voices in Irish folk music, Karan Casey is a natural innovator. More than a decade ago American audiences were introduced to Casey fronting the Irish "supergroup" Solas. Following their groundbreaking early releases, Casey struck out on her own. That decision was based on an independent spirit determined to control her touring schedule and committed to maintaining a family life. That family has now grown (her second child, Áine, was born in May of 2006), as has her solo discography. Karan has just completed her fifth solo album entitled Ships in the Forest. Produced once again by Donald Shaw, the new album focuses largely onthe traditional repertoire. The album was recorded at Karan’s home in County Cork and features the members of her current touring band, Caoimhín Vallely (piano), Kate Ellis (cello) and Robbie Overson (guitar) along with some special guests, including Kris Drever and
Niall and Cillian Vallely.

Chango SpasiukChango SpasiukHoracio "Chango" Spasiuk is an Argentine chamamé musician and accordion player.

Of Ukrainian grandparents, El Chango had a strong Polka music influence from his early days; Eastern European musical influences were also already present in the chamamé music of the region. He had his first accordion at age 12, which he played at parties, weddings and other events with his father and uncle.

With his scarecrow looks, wild howls of creative fervor and almost terrifying mastery of the accordion, few artists can match the impact of Chango Spasiuk's recent triumphant 'arrival'. He has brought with him a charming band and a little known music called chamamé, from the north eastern corner of Argentina.

Lo Còr de la PlanaLo Còr de la Plana“With just those voices and percussion, they did remarkable things . . . The music was equally robust and intricate.” —New York Times

Singing in the disappearing Romance language of Occitan, the vocal and percussion ensemble Lo Còr de la Plana of Southern France not only brings a captivating ancient culture to life, but combines its rich traditions with 21st-century polyphony and subtle electronics. On their first U.S. tour, the irrepressible men of Lo Còr combine bendir drums, tambourines, footstomping, and hand-clapping with drones and call-and-response to create an utterly infectious musical experience. Their art reflects influences ranging from chant to Bartók, Middle Eastern vocal tonalities to the Massilia Sound System.

The High 48sSince forming in 2006, The High 48s have grabbed the attention of festival audiences in the Upper Midwest and beyond, toured steadily, released two critically acclaimed CDs and won first place in the 2008 RockyGrass Band Competition in Lyons, Colorado. The High 48s play bluegrass in the traditional style, with close three-part harmonies sung around a single microphone. But unlike many traditional bluegrass bands working the festival circuit today, the High 48s don’t draw their material exclusively from the hallowed back catalogs of bluegrass’s “first generation,” artists such as Bill Monroe, Flatt and Scruggs, and Jimmy Martin. The High 48s focus instead on writing original material that combines the soul and drive of first-generation bluegrass with the harder-edged sound of alternative country and roots rock.

Bill FrisellBill FrisellRudy RoystonRudy RoystonRESCHEDULED FROM JUNE: A rare opportunity to hear guitar maven (and Grammy winner) Bill Frisell in the intimate space of The Cedar. Tonight he will be complemented by Rudy Royston (drums), and Tony Scherr (bass).

“It’s hard to find a more fruitful meditation on American music than in the compositions of guitarist Bill Frisell. Mixing rock and country with jazz and blues, he's found what connects them: improvisation and a sense of play. Unlike other pastichists, who tend to duck passion, Mr. Frisell plays up the pleasure in the music and also takes on another often-avoided subject, tenderness.”– New York Times

“Frisell is a revered figure among musicians – like Miles Davis and few others, his signature is built from pure sound and inflection; an anti-technique that is instantly identifiable.” – Philadelphia Inquirer“

Peter MayerPeter MayerMinnesota singer/songwriter Peter Mayer is returning to the Cedar Cultural Center for his annual solo show. Peter has gained a passionate following across the country, and been a favorite here in Minnesota for years. His philosophical songs break the boundaries of "folk", and transcend to a realm well beyond the everyday love song. Peter recently released his 8th CD entitled "Novelties" which features 14 songs on the humorous side--a light-hearted departure from his previous collections. Mary Sue Twohy of XM radio says "Peter Mayer makes it look easy--beautifully crafted songs that pose eternal questions--his arrangements make it sound like there is certainly more than one man and his guitar". Dirty Linen Magazine says "Mayer offers up everything you could ever want from a singer/songwriter".
