That, friends, is most definitely the recipe for a good time.

The Boston-based string-band revivalists Crooked Still feature the captivating and angelic voice of Aoife O'Donovan, virtuosic solos from banjo master Greg Liszt, Corey DiMario on double bass, and the most recent additions, brilliant young musicians fiddler Brittany Haas and cellist Tristan Clarridge. Whether you are seeing them for the first time or are an old-hand, Crooked Still continue on their still deliciously crooked path of injecting new energy into traditional and roots music.

Opening tonight will be Boston-based singer-songwriter Jake Armerding.

The 17 Hippies started off playing “unplugged” - meaning unplugged - with their line-up changing from three to twenty or so musicians. A few years later they “condensed” into the current line-up, and for the past six years or more, they’ve been playing with the same thirteen people (with the exception of Danda, their new bass player) Their groove foundation is bass, banjo, guitar and ukulele (and sometimes accordion and tenor horn), and then they add cello, violins, clarinets, trumpet, and trombone … and no percussion!

Ralph Stanley and his Clinch Mountain Boys with Jim Lauderdale

Its stark emotional urgency is rooted in a darker time, when pain was the common coin of life and the world offered sinful humanity no hope of refuge. Preserved in the cultural amber of remote Appalachia, this terse, forlorn sound is the bedrock of Stanley’s inimitable style. Now 82 years young, Stanley has been performing professionally since he and his older brother, Carter, formed a band in their native southwestern Virginia in 1946. Between that date and 1966, when Carter died, the Stanley Brothers and the Clinch Mountain Boys became one of the most celebrated bluegrass groups in the world, rivaling in popularity such titans as Bill Monroe and Flatt & Scruggs.

Chicha Libre with The Poor Nobodys

The new band—led by Barbès club owner Olivier Conan—is reviving the style that was popular among indigenous empowerment groups in the 1970s, but frowned down upon by the middle class and mainstream. Antibalas did it with Afrobeat. Sidestepper did it with Afro-Colombian music. Now Chicha Libre does it with the funky wah-wah groove and psychedelic organ of Peru’s Amazon. Their debut album, Sonido Amazonico (Barbès Records), features cover songs from the era alongside originals arranged not only in the sound of the time, but using the spirit of Chicha’s syncretism.

Based in Durham, North Carolina, Megafaun was built by brothers Brad and Phil Cook and fellow Eau Claire, Wisconsin, native Joe Westerlund. The trio, plus longtime friend Justin Vernon (a.k.a. Bon Iver), made the cross country move together from WI to NC as the band DeYarmond Edison, ultimately splitting in 2006. Megafaun was born from those ashes and proceeded to record the remarkable album Bury the Square in 2007. They found a home on the road, collaborating with friends (they also joined Akron/Family and Dreyblatt as backing band) and developing an American musical language that is exquisitely translated by this year's Gather, Form & Fly--a record that is an ode to death, love, musical history (from blues to musique-concréte), community, tradition, and experimentation.

After spending nearly a decade in The Byrds, McGuinn felt a solo career beckoning. In 1973, he released his solo debut 'Roger McGuinn', featuring participation from former band mates including innovative country-rock guitarist Clarence White, Crosby and Hillman. Bob Dylan even contributed mouth harp on "I'm So Restless". A year later McGuinn released his second solo LP, 'Peace on You'.

And the music is ravishing. But who are these two men from Minneapolis? Can the hearts of John Munson and Matt Wilson be as pure as these songs we hear? No. These are two practical and desperate gentlemen who have scrubbed around in the underbrush of music long enough to have touched glory and to have been gored by humiliation. Imagine the most moldy dressing room inside the loneliest bar. Now imagine two middle-aged men on a vinyl couch, crying in their underwear. There have been some sad moments. Three decades ago, like proud and powerful young rodents, Munson and Wilson set about digging at the roots of a golden shrubbery called Music. They scratched the dirt for money and glory they thought might be buried underneath.

The fans already know that Kelley is a genuine rarity -- a woman who has muscled her way onto the scene on her own terms with an identity steeped in blues/roots/Gospel traditions and a refreshing originality. She makes music with it's righteous roots intact that also crosses boundaries, has an open-minded, exploratory attitude and takes on social and political issues. She's just released her fourth release Mercy, an intense, creative burst that fuses Hunt’s righteous roots influences and contemporary overlays with rich veins of political and social commentary.

There’s a place where wild-eyed farmers whip through fiddle tunes with a yelp; Japanese Celtophiles jig and reel to Swedish dance numbers in a Tokyo basement; And, the nyckelharpa (a fiddle with a keyboard) becomes a deadly weapon, as tuned-down, spiced-up guitars give a sly wink to Turkish ouds. Here, brand-new tunes sound achingly ancient.
The Cedar and The Walker present Micachu and the Shapes with Dessa (at The Cedar)

Start: 09/23/2009 - 8:00pm

The leader of Micachu and the Shapes is Mica Levi, a 22-year-old, brilliant, style-smashing Brit. She writes sweetly disjointed pop, has composed for the London Philharmonic, and to her ears everything is fair game—streaming distorted loops, skiffle riffs, and grime beats through hooky hyperkinetic arrangements. Pitchfork calls the group “the freshest thing to come along so far in 2009.” Opening the night in this all-standing, clublike setting is Dessa of Doomtree who introduces a new band featuring electric guitar, acoustic bass, and violin.

Expanding upon its ten year run of Nordic Roots Festivals, this annual event will now encompass performers from all over the world, each with their own unique take on their "local" music.

Global Roots music is not necessarily what most people easily identify as "world music." Conventions of rock, hip hop, jazz, and music from many cultures are blended. Barriers are crossed both geographically and stylistically. Like our previous focus with Nordic Roots, the presentation is decidedly contemporary, but the roots go back centuries.

All of this year's festival evening shows will be "standing room only," presented on an open floor for dancing and rocking...

Led by the two-time Academy Award and Golden Globe-winning composer of Brokeback Mountain and Babel, Gustavo Santaolalla, the group's latest project is Mar Dulce (Sweet Sea). The new album sees Bajofondo’s seven virtuosic musicians lead listeners through a sensual soundscape of tango, trip-hop, drum & bass and pop elements that redefine the essence of tango for the 21st century.

When they break into the chorus (in English) of "Neurociência do Amor" - "Let us sing to the rainbow of love all together/Yes, singing the music of life we are all one" - they sound like they mean it and that somehow the 1960s didn't end." - NEW YORK TIMES

Documenting a self-described "experiment in terror" for the band, French filmmakers Vincent Moon (who is noted for his work with Arcade Fire, The Shins, and The National) and Jeremiah provide a fascinating up-close look at these ambitious live rehearsals. By showing us sets out of chronological order, alternating between black-and-white performance footage and behind-the-scenes color sequences, and toying with the audiences field of view, we are always kept engaged and eagerly anticipating what's to come.
