The Boston-based string-band revivalists Crooked Still feature the captivating and angelic voice of Aoife O'Donovan\, virtuosic solos from banjo master Greg Liszt\, Corey DiMario on double bass\, and the most recent additions\, brilliant young musicians fiddler Brittany Haas and cellist Tristan Clarridge. Whether you are seeing them for the first time or are an old-hand\, Crooked Still continue on their still deliciously crooked path of injecting new energy into traditional and roots music.

Opening tonight will be Boston-based singer-songwriter Jake Armerding.

The 17 Hippies started off playing “unplugged” - meaning unplugged - with their line-up changing from three to twenty or so musicians. A few years later they “condensed” into the current line-up\, and for the past six years or more\, they’ve been playing with the same thirteen people (with the exception of Danda\, their new bass player) Their groove foundation is bass\, banjo\, guitar and ukulele (and sometimes accordion and tenor horn)\, and then they add cello\, violins\, clarinets\, trumpet\, and trombone … and no percussion!

Its stark emotional urgency is rooted in a darker time\, when pain was the common coin of life and the world offered sinful humanity no hope of refuge. Preserved in the cultural amber of remote Appalachia\, this terse\, forlorn sound is the bedrock of Stanley’s inimitable style. Now 82 years young\, Stanley has been performing professionally since he and his older brother\, Carter\, formed a band in their native southwestern Virginia in 1946. Between that date and 1966\, when Carter died\, the Stanley Brothers and the Clinch Mountain Boys became one of the most celebrated bluegrass groups in the world\, rivaling in popularity such titans as Bill Monroe and Flatt &amp\; Scruggs.

The new band—led by Barbès club owner Olivier Conan—is reviving the style that was popular among indigenous empowerment groups in the 1970s\, but frowned down upon by the middle class and mainstream. Antibalas did it with Afrobeat. Sidestepper did it with Afro-Colombian music. Now Chicha Libre does it with the funky wah-wah groove and psychedelic organ of Peru’s Amazon. Their debut album\, Sonido Amazonico (Barbès Records)\, features cover songs from the era alongside originals arranged not only in the sound of the time\, but using the spirit of Chicha’s syncretism.

And the music is ravishing. But who are these two men from Minneapolis? Can the hearts of John Munson and Matt Wilson be as pure as these songs we hear? No. These are two practical and desperate gentlemen who have scrubbed around in the underbrush of music long enough to have touched glory and to have been gored by humiliation. Imagine the most moldy dressing room inside the loneliest bar. Now imagine two middle-aged men on a vinyl couch\, crying in their underwear. There have been some sad moments. Three decades ago\, like proud and powerful young rodents\, Munson and Wilson set about digging at the roots of a golden shrubbery called Music. They scratched the dirt for money and glory they thought might be buried underneath.

Global Roots music is not necessarily what most people easily identify as &quot\;world music.&quot\; Conventions of rock\, hip hop\, jazz\, and music from many cultures are blended. Barriers are crossed both geographically and stylistically. Like our previous focus with Nordic Roots\, the presentation is decidedly contemporary\, but the roots go back centuries.

Documenting a self-described &quot\;experiment in terror&quot\; for the band\, French filmmakers Vincent Moon (who is noted for his work with Arcade Fire\, The Shins\, and The National) and Jeremiah provide a fascinating up-close look at these ambitious live rehearsals. By showing us sets out of chronological order\, alternating between black-and-white performance footage and behind-the-scenes color sequences\, and toying with the audiences field of view\, we are always kept engaged and eagerly anticipating what's to come.
