SUMMARY:Crooked Still with Jake Armerding
DESCRIPTION:
<img src=\\"/sites/thecedar.org/files/u4/CrookedStill09.jpg\\" alt=\\"Crooked Still\\" title=\\"Crooked Still\\" align=\\"left\\" border=\\"1\\" height=\\"178\\" hspace=\\"10\\" vspace=\\"5\\" width=\\"250\\" />The nines have it\, and we can't wait to welcome them back\, just shy of a year since their memorable Halloween 2008 appearance at The Cedar! The Boston-based string-band revivalists Crooked Still feature the captivating and angelic voice of Aoife O'Donovan\, virtuosic solos from banjo master Greg Liszt\, Corey DiMario on double bass\, and the most recent additions\, brilliant young musicians fiddler Brittany Haas and cellist Tristan Clarridge. Whether you are seeing them for the first time or are an old-hand\, Crooked Still continue on their still deliciously crooked path of injecting new energy into traditional and roots music.

Opening tonight will be Boston-based singer-songwriter Jake Armerding.

The 17 Hippies started off playing “unplugged” - meaning unplugged - with their line-up changing from three to twenty or so musicians. A few years later they “condensed” into the current line-up\, and for the past six years or more\, they’ve been playing with the same thirteen people (with the exception of Danda\, their new bass player) Their groove foundation is bass\, banjo\, guitar and ukulele (and sometimes accordion and tenor horn)\, and then they add cello\, violins\, clarinets\, trumpet\, and trombone … and no percussion!

Its stark emotional urgency is rooted in a darker time\, when pain was the common coin of life and the world offered sinful humanity no hope of refuge. Preserved in the cultural amber of remote Appalachia\, this terse\, forlorn sound is the bedrock of Stanley’s inimitable style. Now 82 years old\, Stanley has been performing professionally since he and his older brother\, Carter\, formed a band in their native southwestern Virginia in 1946. Between that date and 1966\, when Carter died\, the Stanley Brothers and the Clinch Mountain Boys became one of the most celebrated bluegrass groups in the world\, rivaling in popularity such titans as Bill Monroe and Flatt &amp\; Scruggs.

The new band—led by Barbès club owner Olivier Conan—is reviving the style that was popular among indigenous empowerment groups in the 1970s\, but frowned down upon by the middle class and mainstream. Antibalas did it with Afrobeat. Sidestepper did it with Afro-Colombian music. Now Chicha Libre does it with the funky wah-wah groove and psychedelic organ of Peru’s Amazon. Their debut album\, Sonido Amazonico (Barbès Records)\, features cover songs from the era alongside originals arranged not only in the sound of the time\, but using the spirit of Chicha’s syncretism.

After spending nearly a decade in The Byrds\, McGuinn felt a solo career beckoning. In 1973\, he released his solo debut 'Roger McGuinn'\, featuring participation from former band mates including innovative country-rock guitarist Clarence White\, Crosby and Hillman. Bob Dylan even contributed mouth harp on &quot\;I'm So Restless&quot\;. A year later McGuinn released his second solo LP\, 'Peace on You'.

Expanding upon its ten year run of Nordic Roots Festivals\, this annual event will now encompass performers from all over the world\, each with their own unique take on their &quot\;local&quot\; music.

Global Roots music is not necessarily what most people easily identify as &quot\;world music.&quot\; Conventions of rock\, hip hop\, jazz\, and music from many cultures are blended. Barriers are crossed both geographically and stylistically. Like our previous focus with Nordic Roots\, the presentation is decidedly contemporary\, but the roots go back centuries.

All of this year's festival evening shows will be &quot\;standing room only\,&quot\; presented on an open floor for dancing and rocking...
