In an art form long dominated by men\, she's an instrumentalist with such technical poise and unbridled energy that her concerts are thrill-inducing affairs. In a field where a player's sound is often defined by his or her county of origin in Ireland\, Carroll\, the child of Irish immigrants\, is a product of Chicago's vibrant Celtic music scene. But her most unlikely achievement might well be that Carroll has composed more than a dozen tunes that have become standards among her peers.

Her live performance is fierce and funny\, outspoken and vulnerable\, passionate and real. The emotional honesty of Ferrick’s first-person lyrics\, the force of her vocal delivery and the disciplined fury of her musicianship connects her to her audience with confidence and grace. She’s been gaining fans since her first release at age 22 on Atlantic Records. Her next three recordings were released by indie label What Are Records. In 2000\, Melissa launched her own label\: Right On Records. Her 2006 release In the Eyes of Strangers marked the label’s sixth release. As if in acknowledgment of the passing years\, even though her formidable energy be undiminished\, Melissa&#39\;s new album due out in September is entitled Goodbye Youth.

Openers will be acoustic alt-folk duo Coyote Grace. As their website succinctly puts is\: Girl meets Girl. Girl becomes Boy. Girl and Boy become a band. Their songs weave a curious tapestry conveying themes of transformation\, introspection\, and the impermanence of identity.

The group has now become five with the addition of fiddler Brittany Haas and Tristan Clarridge on cello and second fiddle. Lead vocalist Aoife O’Donovan told No Depression magazine\, “When you’re in a quartet\, and one of your members who’s been a huge creative part of your sound decides to leave\, it definitely crosses your mind to just not do it. But we had spent five years building a name for ourselves. And if you look at almost every band that’s successful\, there’s been line-up changes.” If Still Crooked\, the first album from the new line-up\, is any indication\, success for this young band will be explosive. Crooked Still continues to perform one of the most compelling forms of alternative bluegrass and string band music today.

Having a family of musical wanderers who migrated across the US every few years\, the landscape and the musical influences were constantly changing. Spanish tangos\, Sunday morning gospel\, classical and jazz were the accompaniment to her home life. Her first song was recorded at age three and by age eight she was studying piano and performing in community musical productions.

With that kind of bloodline and a lifetime of playing under his belt\, it is understandable that Toumani Diabaté is the undisputed master of the instrument\, a highly versatile form of 21-stringed harp fashioned from a gourd. Diabaté’s first solo recording in 20 years\, The Mandé Variations (Nonesuch)\, is a stunningly beautiful\, immediately accessible blend of traditional melodies\, original compositions and breathtaking improvisations. ‘The Mandé Variations’ is probably the most ambitious and challenging

But in 1985\, after countless hit records\, Grammy nominations\, American Music Awards\, and gold and platinum albums\, J.D. Souther decided to walk away from his solo career. According to Souther\: “I just wanted to be a good songwriter. I wanted to just stay home and write.”

Kassin + 2 is the new portrait of Rio’s rich musical\, cultural and ethnic diversity. The final installment in the + 2 trilogy — fellow band members Moreno Veloso (son of the great Caetano) and Domenico Lancellotti were the featured names for the first two rounds — this is the vanguard of a new generation of Brazilian musicians. Heirs to a family heritage of Tropicalia and Samba and respected producers in their own right\, this unique mix of traditional Brazilian songwriting with the quirky beats\, loops\, and noises of contemporary electronica is defining the sound of New Brazil.
