"The Marriage of Heaven and Hell": A CD Release Event for Felonious Bosch and Honeysuckle Rose
A Heaven/Hell multimedia celebration of the release of two CDs: the self-titled debut from Hot Club swing combo Honeysuckle Rose and "New Dark Ages" from the medieval-inspired rockers Felonious Bosch!
"Once meek, and in a perilous path,
The just man kept his course along
The vale of death.
Roses are planted where thorns grow.
And on the barren heath
Sing the honey bees."
- William Blake, "The Marriage of Heaven and Hell", ca. 1790
This dark yet fun-filled evening will be hosted by the "MC From Hell" John Fenner who will also play a few songs of his own with the band Strange Friends. Also on the bill are Maximum Verbosity, playwrights/poets/mimes who sometimes use words you've never even heard of, and local rockers / movie producers Freeze Dried Fun, who will premiere the trailer from their upcoming full-length motion picture.
Beginning on the Heavenly side of the night, Honeysuckle Rose features vocalist Rose Oyamot; Dean Harrington and Dan Hansen on guitars; David Stenshoel on violin; and Holle Brian on acoustic bass. Infusing standards from the 1920s/30s/40s with Rose's sweet voice and a strong Django Reinhardt / Stephane Grappelli influence, HSR have been performing around the Twin Cities for the last couple of years.
And going straight to Hell will be Felonious Bosch (unofficial motto: "Black is the New Black") whose members include Katy Thomasberg on vocals; Scott Nieman on bouzouki(s), guitar and cittern; Renee Bracchi on drums and percussion; and Drew Miller on bass & dulcimer. Also swimming in the river Styx with FnBosch will be sax man Steve Clarke (Working Stiffs) and David Stenshoel. The CD "New Dark Ages" is enhanced with video, available at discerning record stores, online at Omnium Records and also as a download at the iTunes Store.
"...intriguing, appealing... the Bosch mixes and matches Middle Eastern and Celtic folk music with (Katy) Thomasberg's siren songs to create often mesmerizing tracks... ...there's a lighter-than-air quality to these songs, even as they often revolve around drones. Unusual and unusually attractive, Felonious Bosch gives folk tradition a 3.0 upgrade." -- Michael Toland, High Bias (listening with extreme prejudice)
"...the wonderfully named Felonious Bosch expand on the ideas of their initial EP, and New Dark Ages is very aptly titled. There's a sparseness to the sound and production that seems empty at first, but soon becomes logical, there's meant to be space and emptiness in this music. Although it might contain some elements of folk and world music... they're very much a rock band with their own vision colored in differing shades of black."
-- Chris Nickson, all music guide
"...Katy Thomasberg reinvents herself as a quasi-mystic probably headed for hell as she genre splices ancient sounding melodies from many cultures with dark lyrics sung by her soaring voice." -- Midwest Record Recap
