Larry Long and Fiddlin' Pete Watercott: A 30th anniversary reunion concert with old friends Prudence Johnson, Larry Dalton
Larry Long and Fiddlin' Pete Watercott: A 30th anniversary reunion concert, with old friends Prudence Johnson, Larry Dalton, Teresa Chandler, Patty Kakac and more! Troubador and Smithsonian Folkways recording artist Larry Long brings us some of the best of hundreds of songs he has written in over 30 years on the road, some conceived with the invaluable help of elders and children he has helped to connect, all songs tuneful and heartfelt, and a wellspring of inspiration for people everywhere to get involved and strive to make the world a better place.
Tonight’s show is a special reunion of two long-term friends. Larry Long met Pete Watercott during the 70’s while Larry was attending St Cloud State University in Pete’s hometown. The journey since has taken the pair far and wide:
“In the 1970s I hitch-hiked, hopped freights, and circled the western United States with Fiddlin' Pete Watercott. We traveled in a pick-up truck with a plywood topper that we called "The Lone Prairie Schooner" and "Red Caboose." Although we were both conscientious objectors to war, it was often the veterans of Foreign Wars who took us in.” Since those early days, Larry has kept on travelling while accruing numerous awards honoring his community service (including a Pope John XXIII award, and Spirit of Crazy Horse Award) and his musical accomplishments (Bush Foundation Artist Fellowship).
This concert will come just after the conclusion of the first run of the World premiere performance of the play Wellstone! at the History Theatre (Oct 7--Nov 5), for which Larry Long contributed music and lyrics. Some of the love songs from the play will be performed tonight at the Cedar, while the remainder of the material will be predominantly a return to the roots of folk ballads that honor people they met along the way, country swing and old-time fiddle tunes. While Larry has been known to get political on occasions, for this show he promises a respite from politics, and an emphasis on music, and bringing people together--and at no time is this more important than in post-election week.
". . . Larry Long . . . sings where we are, about what is happening. He takes the real sound, the real words and gives us back our songs and we hear what singers we all are and how beautiful, and how strong." (Meridel Le Sueur)
"Larry Long is doing what more singers and songwriters should be doing: using music to help people learn to work together, and bring a world of peace." (Pete Seeger)
