Red House Records presents John Gorka

Saturday, November 11, 2006 - 6:00pm
$23.00

Premier singer-songwriter John Gorka is back with his first brand new album in three years: Writing in the margins, a collection of folk, country and pop songs about love, war (appropriately enough for a concert on Veterans' Day), and hope for the future. A special CD release concert, the event will feature the band that plays on the new album.

Hailed by Billboard as “one of Gorka’s most impressive outings,” Writing in the Margins is a catchy collection of folk, country and pop tunes that explores themes of love, war and hope for the future. It has a full folk-rock sound with warm production and guest vocals by Nanci Griffith, Lucy Kaplansky and Alice Peacock. Already a favorite on AAA and Americana radio, Writing in the Margins is one of Gorka’s most popular and successful albums to date. He once again proves himself one of the most compelling contemporary songwriters with songs that are powerful and engaging, whether they are whimsical love songs or more serious narrative stories like the CD’s title track. Written from the perspective of a U.S. soldier fighting overseas, it documents one man’s life in combat and his love back home. Steering away from preachy politics or overwrought emotion, the song is moving in its honest simplicity. With warm production and a full folk/rock sound, the song showcases Gorka at his best, illuminating both the beauty and darkness that fill our complex world. An album that looks to a brighter tomorrow, Writing in the Margins is appropriately more up-tempo than Gorka’s previous release Old Futures Gone, from the rollicking country number “I Miss Everyone” to the soulful sounds of “When You Sing.” Featuring horns and backing vocals by Kathleen Johnson, “When You Sing” is a fitting tribute to living legend Mavis Staples. In addition to the 10 original songs featured on Gorka’s record, there are also two stunning covers—Townes Van Zandt’s “Snow Don’t Fall” and Stan Rogers’ “The Lockkeeper.” At home with these songs, he makes the tunes his own, and they sit comfortably between his own original gems. Like Van Zandt and Rogers, Gorka writes songs that are timeless in their depth and emotion. Such songs are what comprise Writing in the Margins.

"Scathing beauty...Gorka makes even the harshest observations beautiful." - Dallas Morning News
