Concert for Kateri, featuring Dave Simonett and JUST ANNOUNCED, special guest performance by TRAMPLED BY TURTLES, Charlie Parr, The Brass Kings, The Intangibles, Aztec Dancers, Drum Circle and Jingle Dress Dancers. A Benefit Celebrating Native American Women in Recovery.

Come join top musicians and cultural performers in a show of support for Kateri Residence, a residential place of healing for American Indian women operated by St. Stephen’s Human Services, a 501C3 non-profit located in Minneapolis, Minnesota. The fundraiser will help to make up for lost funding as the Kateri moves into its 35th year of operation. While the word “fundraiser” and phrases like “for a good cause” bounce off the walls, the music will be anything but soft. Punk rock roots will be on display and intermixing with Native American traditional performances to make for a truly unique showing of support for, well, a good cause.

Opening the evening will be local act The Intangibles, a multi-instrument group lead by Bob Nordquist (guitar, vocals). With The Intangibles influences ranging from Bluegrass to Latin to Eastern European, their music shudders at the thought of being classified in one genre alone. This eclectic performance compliments the diversity of the evening’s other musicians and performers.

In between acts the concert–The MIGIZI Communications Drum Group, Aztec Dancers and Traditional Jingle Dancers, to make sure there is never a dull moment, will treat goers and attendees to performances. All participants will be taking part in the evening’s festivities due to their personal interest or involvement in the work done through the metro area operation.

“The Brass Kings are honored to support Kateri Residence and their efforts to strengthen the health of women and their families.” Brass King’s member Mikkel Beckmen says. ”We look forward to celebrating, with all the other artists, dancers and musicians, Native American women in recovery and the strength and vitality of the Indian community. We are all connected and Kateri helps the whole community when it helps one person.” Beckmen (scrub board & fridge door) is one of three members of The Brass Kings, who have found their newly released, self-titled album in rotation on the airwaves of the Current and other local radio stations. Lead singer, Steve Kraul (guitar, vocals) has released solo works in addition to performing at festivals in the US and Europe and has garnered accolades for his guitar playing and songwriting. He continues to write and record both for his solo project and for The Brass Kings. Brad Ptacek rounds out the band. Moving to Minneapolis, he attended art school, landed a bass gig with the Urban Guerillas and toured regionally. He plays his homemade washtub bass with a punk-rockers energy - coaxing notes from an instrument most people have a hard time just keeping in tune.

The evening’s headliners begin with Charlie Parr, a well-known name in the Minnesota music scene. Parr has received accolades from a growing roster of musicians such as Alan Sparhawk, Richard Adams, Dakota Dave Hull, Spider John Koerner. He plays his bluegrass guitar and sings as strong as he feels about the work done in the community. “I spent over 10 years working with folks who live on the margins, and I miss that work very much. This show gives me an opportunity to reconnect with an amazing and powerful community.” Several guests will be joining Parr onstage to continue the evening’s theme of celebration and community.

After the final raffle prize–winners are announced; the stage will play host to Trampled By Turtles front man Dave Simonett and his punk-influenced bluegrass stylings, along with a special set from Trampled by Turtles! “We enjoy traditional bluegrass but we all grew up immersed in rock ‘n roll and I think our band reflects those qualities.” Throughout the past two years, Dave and Trampled By Turtles have toured the country, performing everywhere from punk-rock basement parties to such storied venues as the Great American Music Hall in San Francisco and the Bowery Ballroom in New York. And the band’s diverse musicality has struck a chord among their peers who have asked the band to join them onstage, including Low, Camper Van Beethoven, Pedro the Lion, Nickel Creek, Cowboy Junkies, Ike Reilly and others. Dave will be returning the favor and welcoming special guests on stage to join in playing and singing for Kateri.

A limited edition CD offering unreleased material of several performers will be on sale to memorialize the event and its participants. Individuals, businesses and social institutions interested in sponsorship, donations, or volunteering should contact Kim Werst at katericoncert@gmail.com.
