Greg Herriges CD Release featuring Pooja Goswami, A. Pavan, Troy Berg and John Wright with guests Lehto and Wright
Guitar renegade Greg Herriges’ new CD Telluric Currents offers
folk fusion at its best — a mix of the traditional and the rockin,’ the
familiar and the exotic. The 14-track CD is like a passport in a jewel
case, with stamps for Japan ('Hina Matsuri'), Turkey ('Uskudar'), India
('Sabir Khan Song') and Iran ('The Sugar in the Milk'), not to mention
a 1960s surfin’ safari to the West Coast ('Pipeline'). Herriges always
comes off as native maestro, never slumming dilettante. His technique
on both guitar and bouzouki is formidable, his feel for diverse
cultures exemplary. (Tom Surowicz, VitaMN / StarTribune)
Join guitarist / bouzoukist / composer Greg Herriges and friends as we celebrate the release of his new CD Telluric Currents. Greg's second New Folk Records release is a "whirled" assortment of East and West, original and traditional. Tonight he brings it all to the Cedar: mesmerizing acoustic fusion and new takes on traditional Indian, Turkish, and surf-rock music with ethnopercussionist Troy Berg, bassist John Wright, and Indian tabla maestro A. Pavan; avant-guitar inventions and arrangements of East Asian tunes; and collaborations with very special guest, Indian classical vocalist Pooja Goswami. Other guests include a chorus of "lassos d'amore" (air hoses) with friends from In the Heart of the Beast Puppet and Mask Theatre. Fellow New Folk recording artists, folk-rock duo Lehto and Wright will open the show.
Greg Herriges's unique playing and composing style is honed by his study of South and East Asian music. His previous CD It Plays Me included collaborations with Chinese pipa virtuoso Gao Hong. He has been called on as composer/accompanist for theatre productions including Children's Stories from India, Beneath the Surface, and Chekhov's The Cherry Orchard. He is also an author/arranger of internationally published guitar book/CDs, including World Guitar, Guitar Explorer, and many in the Guitar Songs for Dummies series.
It Plays Me is an album of amazing sounds. Some will have a familiar tone while others betray origins and inspiration from different cultures. The common thread is excellent performance and style. …will mesmerize anyone who gives it a fair hearing. (Rambles (U.K.))
…fabulous crossover world music of the highest quality. …a gifted musician who is able to bring the best sounds from several cultures into one type of intriguing music. (Folkworld (Germany))
A 'musician’s musician’s musician' …outrageously talented… (Wild Fruit Folk Music)
