Third Tuesday Dance Night with Mandrágora Tango

Tuesday, March 17, 2009 - 8:30pm
7:00pm

The Cedar continues the Third Tuesday Dance Night series with Mandrágora Tango. Third Tuesday is a new monthly event for couple dancing featuring live music and the great, open dance floor of The Cedar. Yes, it is St Patrick's Day, but it is an undeniable fact that not everyone is instantly Irish on March 17. How about instead celebrating the second day of Bacchanalia (according to Wikipedia, a wild and mystic festival of the Roman god Bacchaus (Dionysus in Greek)? From there it seems only a small step towards an evening of tango with the fluid sounds of Mandrágora Tango. Mandrágora Tango is a vibrant collective of tango musicians based in Minneapolis, dedicated to preserving the nearly-lost musical forms of tango and translating them for today's listeners and dancers. Tango music defies categorization, living somewhere between classical, jazz and world beat. Mandrágora dances across those lines and creates a music that is fresh, engaging, danceable and nostalgic.

Come early (7.15--7.45pm) for a free tango lesson with Niko Salgado, who has been teaching tango and salsa at the Social Dance Studio for the past four and a half years, as well as being a regular performer at tango events around the Twin Cities. Dance begins at 8pm.

The Cedar has hosted participatory dance events regularly since its inception 20 years ago. This past summer the sprung, wooden floor at the venue was re-finished for the first time since The Cedar opened its doors in March, 1989.

Tickets available at the door for $8 per person.
