With musical influences that include French chanson, Gypsy swing, tango, Latin alternative, Indian music and beyond, Rupa & the April Fishes create music that is lively, romantic and instantaneously appealing. Based in San Francisco, the band's accessible and multicultural sound has earned them a reputation as one of the most exciting groups in the Bay Area alternative scene. Their rousing and intimate performances have earned them comparisons as encompassing as Lhasa to Gogol Bordello and Beirut to Manu Chao. Drawing from her nomadic childhood in India, France and the US as well as her work as a physician in San Francisco, Rupa's songs explore a wide swath of human experience in a multitude of languages drawing upon inspiration from songs from the streets around the world arranged for cello, accordion, trumpet, upright bass, drums and guitar.

"If local singer Rupa were a movie, she would be Amélie meets Women on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown meets Latcho Drom meets Do the Right Thing. She'd be set in India and Berkeley...She would be (and, in fact, is) an instant cult classic among the smart, idealistic, international set." --SF Weekly
