2009 Square Lake Film & Music Festival redux: “Bring the Outside In”

A severe thunderstorm on August 15th hindered some of the amazing performances scheduled for the 8th annual outdoor Square Lake Festival, so The Cedar is “bringing the outside in” for a full evening of music and locally-made film. The heart of the evening will center around the debut of International Novelty Gamelan’s original film score to The Adventures of Prince Achmed (1926) a feature length animated film by the German animator Lotte Reiniger. A strikingly beautiful film, it is also the oldest surviving animated feature film. It features a silhouette animation technique Reiniger invented which involved manipulated cutouts made from cardboard and thin sheets of lead under a camera.
Paul MetzgerPaul Metzger (experimental variations on banjo) opens up the show. "Metzger has located a quivering space between the raga open-string drone and the ear-warping harmonic meditations of Tony Conrad, and the combined logic puts us both out of time and right in the body of the misshapen instrument." --Pitchfork
