2009 was the year everything blew up—in a good way—for the indie folk trio Megafaun. Megafaun had its roots in the Eau Claire, WI band DeYarmond Edison that brothers Brad and Phil Cook, and Joe Westerlund formed with Justin Vernon (aka Bon Iver) until the band's demise in 2006. When Bon Iver went off to lick his wounds and write his now famous For Emma, Forever Ago album, Megafaun was born. After releasing their debut Bury the Square in 2007, the band  toured extensively, collaborated with artists of all stripes, and generally, had their musical horizons stretched to the nth degree. Their second album Gather, Form & Fly was released in July 2009, and shows the benefits of this period of assimilation and exploration, stretching as it does from traditional folk to experimental and beyond. The critics and fans loved it, and as a result, the band has been catapulted firmly onto the top musical stages of the world, with extensive tours in Europe and North America, and television and festival appearances. Megafaun played the Cedar for the first time in September 2009. Now, nine very busy months later, it is high time to see the new directions in which Megafaun has been evolving in this constantly changing environment. A new mini-album Heretofore is reportedly on its way for this summer.

Breathe Owl BreatheJoining Megafaun tonight will be their old friends Duluth bluesman Charlie Parr, himself no stranger to the Cedar stage, and Breathe Owl Breathe, a sparse yet gorgeous indie folk trio from Ann Arbor, Michigan.

Tickets are on sale now from the Cedar Ticketline (612-338-2674 ext 2), Cedar outlets, and online at Ticketweb.

How did we carve to this? I guess we whittled from the inside out at first, trying to cultivate and cata-pult these small songs over the castle wall. With instruments, levers, wires, and the sturdy encouraging hands of friends, we formed the band / art...
Charlie Parr is a folk and country blues musician, whose tools of a lived-in rasp of a voice, National resonator and 12-string acoustic guitars, and a banjo are put to use in his own songs and re-workings of well-travelled numbers by Mississippi John Hurt...
Brad Cook, Joe Westerlund and Phil Cook originate from Eau Claire Wisconsin, formerly of Amateur Love and DeYarmond Edison, which included Justin Vernon (Bon Iver). Now reside in Durham, North Carolina where they make Appalachian influenced Experimental Rock.
