416 Club Celtic hosted by Drew Miller
With The Langer's Ball, The HiBs, and Todd Menton
Mostly (but not exclusively) local artists in a relaxed evening showcase. Come early and stay for the whole evening, or drop in for an hour or so and sample some of the best acoustic music around in optimal listening room conditions. Boiled In Lead's Drew Miller emcees and DJs an evening of local Irish music for tonight's 416 Club -- setting the tone for St. Patrick's Day.
Todd Menton's calling card is his wry, edgy performing style, focusing on warm, vibrant vocals and sharp playing on guitar, bouzouki, mandolin, bodhran, and tin whistle. Audiences can expect all the drama and hilarity of the traditional songs and tunes, and the darkly humorous word-play of his original songs, delivered with wit and crackling energy. He has released three solo recordings on New Folk Records, joined by guests ranging from the Minnesota Traditional Morris Dancers to the Brass Messengers to Savage Aural Hotbed. Todd's also the lead singer, songwriter and multi-instrumentalist for Boiled in Lead (BiL), writer of the band's most memorable original songs such as "The MicroOrganism" and "Silver Carp." "a fearless creator... clearly for those with adventurous tastes" - SingOut!
The HiBs (pronounced High Bees) are Kate & Jode Dowling and friends. Their name was inspired by a favorite pub in Cork City, and is short for Hibernian. Kate and Jode are masters of flute, tin whistle, fiddle and dance, joined tonight by a percussionist. The heart of the music springs from a relationship dating back to 1993, when Kate and Jode’s eyes first met across a smoky session in Milwaukee. Since 2005, Kate and Jode have been performing as a duet or with an assortment of talented friends as the HiBs. Their premiere recording “40 Acre Notch” captures those moments with a mixture of old favorites and new infatuations. Educators as well as performers, they are co-founders of the Center for Irish Music, an Irish music school that looks to hand down the tradition to the next generation of musicians. "There is no compromise here, the tunes speak for themselves and the musicians play from the heart” - Mairead Ni Mhaonaigh of Altan
The Langer's Ball have been performing around the Midwest since 2007. Featuring Michael Sturm on guitar, mandolin & vocals, and Hannah Rediske on accordion and penny whistle, they play a wide variety of traditional, contemporary and original Celtic songs and tunes. Their debut CD As I Roved Out was released in July 2008, followed the next year by Ships Are Sailing. This new album pushes the envelope for the band, bringing in drums, bass, electric guitar, and guest musicians. Celtophilia.com calls it "...a CD that will be a standout in everyone’s collection for years to come."
Drew Miller is the bass player and founder of Boiled In Lead (celebrating their 27th year on March 17th). Distinct from The Pogues' punked-up pub songs, BiL has always taken a heavier and more eclectic approach, working from the instrumental side of the Irish tradition, and then expanding to reboot folk dance music from many different parts of the world. In the 1980s and 1990s, he was a DJ on KFAI, and is looking forward to spinning a mix of Celtic music between sets tonight.
Tickets: only $5, available at the door!
