In the few short years since their debut in 2006, Pistolera has carved out a rightful place for itself in the congested NYC indie rock scene with their refreshing take on soul-stirring traditional Mexican rhythms laced with social commentary. Their highly melodic and danceable songs are sung in Spanish, and feature lyrics with a strong political content, often talking about border issues, the plight of immigrants, and female strength. Topics on their new album En Este Camino include the plight of the immigrant ("Extranjero"), tongue-in-cheek observations about a racially-biased American power structure ("Policía" and "Piloto") and an appreciation for wisdom that comes from maturity ("Nuevos Ojos," "Un Momento" and "Vieja"). All in all, En Este Camino is as much a celebration of "cultura" as it is thought-provoking owing to the music's unique ability to frame political views without overshadowing the upbeat fiesta attitude of the band.

"Firing funky, folky latin pop, this electrifying New York quartet features songs "En Español) by frontwoman Sandra Lilia Velasquez. Backed by driving accordion riffs of Maria Elena, and backbeat that blends indie-pop with old- school Mexican rancheras. Velasquez is helping redefine the urban latino sound." - CMJ

"...when Sandra Lilia Velasquez stomps her boots to drummer Ani Cordero's rim shots on jumping songs from their debut album...by the time they finish "Tatuaje" your clothes will be soaked with sweat, the soles of your dancing shoes will be smoking, and you won't care whether they're from Brooklyn or Matamoros as long as they don't let the party end. This band makes a vigorous, moving fiesta wherever the bandstand may be." - Houston Press

"Groove along with Pistolera, Sandra Lilia Velasquez and Ani Cordero's funky band, which blends together ranchera, cumbia, banda and rock sounds. Velasquez's intoxicating voice and her passion while playing the electric guitar matched with Cordero's driving drumming style make for quite a spectacular live performance." - The New York Post
