Nordic Roots Festival: JPP and Sinikka Langeland Trio

Saturday, September 29, 2007 - 8:00pm
$22.00
$25.00

Festival favorites include the Finnish stringband JPP, touring in support of their excellent 2006 release Artology (which includes not only their trademark Finnish folkloric fiddle tunes, but also a tribute to swing fiddler Stuff Smith, and a Finnish tango piece)

Jazz and literature also creep into the Festival this year, most notably with the presence of ECM recording artist Sinikka Langeland and her trio. Singer/kantele-playing Sinikka will be highlighting works from her ECM debut Starflowers, which features her settings of the nature poems of Norwegian Hans Børli (1918--89)--a woodcutter by day, and incredibly prolific poet by night. Sounds as cool and crystalline as a mountain stream coursing through Børli's beloved forest.

"Cool, stark and baleful in tone… creates a mood that is timeless and mysterious, yet distinctively modern--redolent of Joni Mitchell at her jazziest or Björk at her oddest." (Mark Hudson, Telegraph, on Sinikka's Starflowers)
