John Brown's Body and Toubab Krewe
A grooving double-bill with eight-person modern reggae band John Brown's Body, and the instrumental, Malian-influenced band Toubab Krewe. JBB's current evolution builds on a reggae foundation, incorporating elements from different genres. The new songs are timeless yet futuristic, anchored yet exploring. These explorations are evident on Amplify, which debuted at number 1 on Billboard’s Reggae Chart in October 2008, and its remix follow-up EP, Re-Amplify, released in March 2009 also debuting on the Billboard’s Reggae Top 10 Chart. JBB’s live show has the kind of organic, body-rocking sound that’s only possible with an 8-piece band where air tight drum and bass, a three piece horn section, and “the most gorgeous melodies in all of modern reggae music” [All Music Guide] meet a dubbed-out sound engineer. Where will JBB head next? What direction will the music take? Who knows, but whatever it is, it is sure to push boundaries.
Blending American and West African influences into a sound all its own, Toubab Krewe has set "a new standard for fusions of rock 'n' roll and West African music" (Afropop Worldwide). Since forming in 2005, the magnetic instrumental quintet has won a diverse and devoted following at performances everywhere from Bonnaroo to 10KLF to the legendary Festival of the Desert in Essakane, Mali. The band developed their unique sound over the course of numerous extended trips to Mali, Guinea, and Ivory Coast, where they immersed themselves in the local culture and studied and performed with luminaries. Along with mixing American rock with West African musical traditions, they also explore the worlds of surf and zydeco, fusing it all together into what the Village Voice describes as "a futuristic, psychedelic, neo-griot frenzy" and Honest Tune hails as "one of the most innovative voices in music today."
