Free Range Pickin' Holiday Show with guest Joy Kills Sorrow

12/09/2006 - 7:00pm

Midwestern Newgrass favorites, Free Range Pickin’, return to the Cedar for their annual Holiday Show. Now in its third year, this event is fast becoming a seasonal tradition for fans of progressive acoustic music in the Twin Cities. As in previous years, you can expect an entertaining evening of original acoustic string band music, set in a festive, seasonal atmosphere; complete with holiday sing-a-longs, games and raffles, and of course, the ever popular six-foot chicken! Sharing the bill with FRP this year is Joy Kills Sorrow, a very exciting band of young acoustic musicians from Boston. Featuring Minnesota’s own Joe Walsh, the first ever mandolin student at the prestigious Berklee School of Music, and 2006 national flatpicking champion Matthew Arcara, Joy Kills Sorrow blends traditional and contemporary influences with original compositions and age-old melodies, creating a sound that is inherently American and uniquely their own.

“Free Range Pickin’ is helping to write the next chapter of acoustic music in America.”
- Tradition Magazine

Recently nominated for 2006 Bluegrass Artist/Group of the Year by the Minnesota Music Academy, Free Range Pickin' is an original acoustic string band that creatively infuse their taste for tradition with contemporary influences and imaginative songwriting. The Twin Cities quartet's eclectic approach to its music, based on lush four-part harmonies and energetic instrumentation (mandolin, banjo, guitar and bass), explores the crossroads of bluegrass, newgrass, contemporary folk, and acoustic jamband music – and continues to generate attention on the national and international stage:

“There’s a youthful energy bubbling up in Free Range Pickin’ and it smartly drives the music of this Minnesota band, giving them a persona that could make serious inroads with college crowds and those who enjoy a modern approach to the music. Free Range Pickin’ is a clever name for this band that does indeed range freely over the ever-widening bluegrass landscape.”
- Bluegrass Unlimited Magazine

"Imaginative, ground-breaking originals played with power and pizzazz… I’ll be doing my best to share the excitement here in Nashville and in our other syndicated locations."
David Higgs - Host: Bluegrass Breakdown, Nashville Public Radio

“The Minneapolis group aptly combines a reverence for sounds of the past with modern cheekiness and expert playing. The band's excellent bluegrass chops and sense of humor should appeal to both the Prairie Home Companion and groove-prone crowds.”
-The Onion
