“These young kids have got energy, talent and do the blues proud with their own flavor. I believe they’ve got a GREAT future ahead.” – B.B. King
How does a kid get the blues? Ryan Perry, now 17, laughs heartily at the notion—like he’s a father himself, maybe even a grandfather, as if fondly recalling his precocious past self. “We haven’t had any bad xperiences as a family,” says Perry, who sings and plays guitar in the Homemade Jamz Blues Band (HJBB) with his brother Kyle (15, bass) and sister Taya (11, drums). He understands the irony of a world-weary anklebiter but more importantly the simple, youthful concept of doing what comes naturally.
Double treat, no tricks in this Halloween-special double bill of two spooky good singer-songwriters, Loudon Wainwright and Chris Smither. Loudon Wainwright III has not only spawned a slew of terrific songs since his emergence as a "New Dylan" in the seventies, he has also spawned his own musical dynasty, including son Rufus, and daughters Martha and Lucy. Along the way, he racked up some choice cameos in TV and film, including M*A*S*H, Knocked Up, Elizabethtown, The Aviator, Big Fish and many more. His latest project is a double-album tribute to another musician entirely. Called High Wide and Handsome: The Charlie Poole Project, it's a celebration of the old-time country banjo player, who died in 1931.
It's been three long years since roots/R&B singer/pianist/guitarist Kelley Hunt last graced The Cedar stage--now it's time for her many loyal fans to welcome her back! The fans already know that Kelley is a genuine rarity -- a woman who has muscled her way onto the scene on her own terms with an identity steeped in blues/roots/Gospel traditions and a refreshing originality. She makes music with it's righteous roots intact that also crosses boundaries, has an open-minded, exploratory attitude and takes on social and political issues. She's just released her fourth release Mercy, an intense, creative burst that fuses Hunt’s righteous roots influences and contemporary overlays with rich veins of political and social commentary.
