Global Roots Festival 2009

09/24/2009 - 8:00pm
09/27/2009 - 11:00pm
Doors Open:
7:00pm

Global Roots Festival 2009The Cedar presents the 2009 Global Roots Festival, September 24-27. Expanding upon its ten year run of Nordic Roots Festivals, this annual event will now encompass performers from all over the world, each with their own unique take on their "local" music.

Global Roots music is not necessarily what most people easily identify as "world music."  Conventions of rock, hip hop, jazz, and music from many cultures are blended. Barriers are crossed both geographically and stylistically. Like our previous focus with Nordic Roots, the presentation is decidedly contemporary, but the roots go back centuries.

All of this year's festival evening shows will be "standing room only," presented on an open floor for dancing and rocking...

We are calling an open meeting to invite all the members of The Cedar’s community to participate in our efforts to navigate through these difficult times. We’ll provide an update of how we’re doing and what our plans are for keeping our momentum strong and our ink black! The meeting is scheduled to last 60-90 minutes.

The 416 Club presents Jelly Mountain Art Collective

04/09/2009 - 7:30pm
Doors Open:
7:00pm

Jelly Mountain416 ClubJelly Mountain was formed in early 2008 by five best friends forever, engaged in a battle against forces of unspeakable evil. The only way they can defeat such adversaries is in the creation of X-treme art in various media, whether it be sound, visual, existential, etc. The members are all college art students in Minneapolis. Formed more as a giant friendship ring as opposed to an exclusive club, the Mountaineers hope to create a better dialogue among other young artists in Minneapolis. The upcoming Round Robin Show in the 416 Club series at The Cedar will consist of 10 performers and bands set-up all at the same time around the room.

Third Tuesday Dance Night with Hot Swing Combo

02/17/2009 - 7:30pm
Doors Open:
7:00pm

Hot Swing ClubThe Third Tuesday Dance Night series for couple dancing continues in style with the cool sounds of the Hot Swing Combo. The Hot Swing Combo, fronted by ace guitarist Robert Bell, was created for the sole purpose of providing dancers the opportunity to be as expressive, creative and innovative as possible while dancing to a group of less than 8 musicians. Big Bands with their excellent arrangements and strength in numbers were/are an obvious choice for dancers. But what if a smaller swing combo, able to incorporate multiple genres including hot Gypsy jazz and sexy Cabaret vocal stylings, could offer dancers varying tempos, inspiring solos, and an endless supply of energy combined with some non-jazz material that shouldn’t work? Hot Swing Combo prove that the formula works!
