Hoven DrovenHurdy GurdyHoven Droven is a Swedish folk rock band founded in 1989. They specialize in instrumental, hard rock arrangements of old Swedish folk tunes. The closest English translation of "Hoven Droven" is "helter skelter" or "whatever."
Their 2005 album "Jumping at the Cedar" was nominated for a 2007 Swedish Grammy award in the folk music category.
Hurdy Gurdy: Exclusively using sounds generated from hurdy gurdys, Stefan Brisland-Ferner of Garmarna and Totte Mattsson of Hedningarna play, process, sample, and tweak both traditional and original tunes in innovative and provocative ways. Their music demonstrates the range and power of this ancient instrument, which has been dubbed a “medieval synthesizer.”
Annbjørg Lien and Bruce Molsky of Waltz With MeVasenKicking off the Nordic Roots Festival this year will be favorites and good friends of The Cedar, Väsen, and a new project conceived by Annbjørg Lien, Waltz With Me.
Waltz With Me is an unusual string quartet project, informed by ancient traditions, but novel. Norwegian leader/composer Annbjørg Lien is a virtuoso of the Hardanger fiddle. Mats Edén (of Groupa) plays fiddle. Cellist and fiddler Tristan Clarridge also plays with Crooked Still, and Darol Anger's Republic of Strings. Bruce Molsky is a master of North American ‘ole-timey’ fiddle music.. and many other things besides. Here, he plays American and Scandinavian fiddles and guitar. Bruce also sings.
Väsen is a unique acoustic ensemble that transcends barriers and delight listeners with their music based in the rural Swedish tradition, delivered impeccably with a contemporary flavor.
TriakelTriakel consists of Emma Härdelin, vocals, Kjell-Erik Eriksson, fiddle and Janne Strömstedt, harmonium. All three are well-established in the forefront of Swedish folkmusic. Emma and Kjell-Erik are also active in the groups Garmarna and Hoven Droven.
Triakel began life as a New Year resolution. After a party together Kjell-Erik and Janne honoured their agreement to perform together on harmonium and fiddle in December 1994. It was a success, and they were keen to follow it up. When Emma Härdelin added her voice to the duo the group was complete. During the past few years the group has toured throughout Sweden and also played in about fifteen different European countries. They have also appeared in Japan and several times in the Unites States and Canada.
DetektivbyrånHedningarna's world is a place where primal folk music collides with sampling and programming, forging a new direction. Hedningarna, "the heathens" in English, drive ancient Nordic music into the modern era paying no attention to the rules of the road. Their newly created tunes are an extension of the living tradition inspired by the melodies of their forebears. The intensity of modern technology mixed with the flavor of ancient instruments and tunes creates the explosive, intense sound of Hedningarna.
Detektivbyrån joins Hedningarna this evening. Detektivbyrån, also referred to as DBY, is a three piece band from Sweden, with a strong emphasis on glockenspiel and accordion. Since 2005 they have performed their melody driven pling-plong tunes. Detektivbyrån is glockenspiel ´n´ accordion on top of fuzzy
beats, swinging hugs and sweet respect. Detektivbyrån is as honest as it's possible to be nowadays.
Please join us for the tenth and final annual Nordic Roots Festival. Artists scheduled to perform in 2008 include many of the artists who have transformed this weekend into an annual pilgrimage of Nordic bliss for so many people: Väsen, Hedningarna, Detektivbyrån, Triakel, Frigg, Waltz With Me featuring Annbjørg Lien and Bruce Molsky, Hoven Droven and Hurdy Gurdy.
