International Guitar Night featuring D'Gary, Clive Carroll, Brian Gore and Miguel de la Bastide
01/27/2008 - 7:30pm
D'GaryInternational Guitar Night is the annual mini-festival that allows you to hear in one evening four of the best acoustic guitarists on the planet, providing an inspirational experience for guitarists and guitar-lovers alike. There are always an intriguing range of styles on display during International Guitar Night, and this year is no exception. Madagascan guitarist D'Gary headlines, and as David Lindley (co-producer with Henry Kaiser of the influential "A World Out of Time" album that first brought D'Gary to the attention of the wider world) says, D'Gary "is a monster guitarist". D'Gary's style is disconcerting to say the least. Listen closely to his music and you'll swear there must be at least two guitarists playing. This illusion stems from D'Gary's penchant for open tunings, and his skilled transcriptions of many traditional Madagascan tunes for guitar.
Clive Carroll (UK) was recently described as “the best and most original young acoustic guitar player and composer in Britain” (Acoustic Guitar Magazine). A former protege of John Renbourn, Carroll's repertoire extends from traditional Irish tunes to new grass, jazz fusion, and compelling original compositions.
'Carroll manages to couch the seemingly sleight-of-hand technical abilities of a Legg or Akkerman in a musical context that's always passionate, warm, richly organic and consistently welcoming' (Guitar Magazine)
Founder of IGN, Brian Gore (USA) brings his own flair with open tunings on the steel-string guitar to rootsy tunes and evocative originals, achieving a wide dynamic range and beautiful tone.
Adding extra sizzle to the evening, IGN this year welcomes Miguel de la Bastide (Canada, via Trinidad), who has been involved with flamenco for over 25 years. He is one of the few guitarists outside of Spain, who has mastered the techniques and the knowledge of the flamenco guitar. He possesses a rare combination of explosive technique with a unique sensitivity to the traditions of flamenco dance and song.
"Billed as "North America's most successful mobile guitar festival," International Guitar Night
is a resounding reminder that music is the most fluid and fluent of
world languages. This year's participants (all featured on the
excellent 2007 CD "International Guitar Night II") are Great Britain's Clive Carroll, a freewheeling Celtic music ace who's also a world-class raconteur; D'Gary,
a master of open tunings from Madagascar featured on the seminal David
Lindley-produced release "A World Out of Time," and an outstanding
singer; Miguel de la Bastide, born in Trinidad, based in Canada and an expert on Spanish flamenco music (go figure!), and Brian Gore, the Bay Area organizer of this intimate and inspiring road show. (Tom Surowicz, The Big Gigs, Star Tribune 1/25/08)
