The Jack and Jim Show, featuring Eugene Chadbourne and Jimmy Carl Black

10/14/2007 - 7:30pm

Eugene ChadbourneEugene ChadbourneA seemingly endless--and endlessly eclectic--series of releases has made the innovative guitarist Dr Eugene Chadbourne ("Jack") one of the underground community's most well known and well-regarded eccentrics; he was frontman for Shockabilly, worked with members of Camper Van Beethoven and Fred Frith, and continues to explore unique styles of music, perfored on a variety of instruments including the electric rake. Jimmy Carl Black ("Jim"), original drummer and vocalist with The Mothers Of Invention ("Hi, boys and girls, I'm Jimmy Carl Black and I'm the Indian of the group."), not only appeared on more than 15 of the original Zappa/Mothers albums, he also starred in the Zappa movie "200 Motels" with Ringo Starr and Keith Moon, played drums with Captain Beefheart and His Magic Band and recorded countless albums around the States and Europe.

The Jack and Jim Show play a wonderful combination of styles associated with both players, in most cases creating a transformation into something else. "Willie the Pimp" of Zappa becomes an old-style country blues, for example. Jazz, psychedelic rock, standards, blues, country and western, bluegrass, native American Indian music and folk rock are all part of a typical evening with Jack and Jim. Eugene plays guitar, banjo and sings. Jimmy plays drums and sings.

"Eugene Chadbourne is one of the great eccentrics of modern music
-- an amazing avant jazz and rock guitarist, squirrelly voiced country
and folk/protest singer and the only known master of the electric rake.
He's paired with blues-singing drummer Jimmy Carl Black, known
to Frank Zappa fans as the "Indian of the group" in the original
Mothers of Invention. Together they're a righteous riot." (Tom Surowicz, The Big Gigs, Minneapolis Star Tribune 10/12/07)
