Submitted by Princess on Thu, 09/30/2010 - 11:04amLast night, I attended the first session of an evening class I’m taking at the University. It’s called “Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction.” In short, the curriculum consists of “how to effectively meditate.” To be clear, I’m the least likely candidate to be interested in or successful at this type of venture. I don’t “get” meditation, I think yoga is nothing more than sweaty stretching, and my eye roll at anything associated with the word “spirituality” may be involuntary at this point. But this is exactly why I decided to enroll: I’m stretching my boundaries, challenging myself, and maybe trying to assuage my hyperactive brain. So I’m leaving this class scratching my head about this 45-minute body scan exercise I’m supposed to do every day (45 minutes during which I'm supposed to ONLY think about various parts of my anatomy, in turn). Can't get enough MNDR
Submitted by Princess on Tue, 03/16/2010 - 10:18amI discovered electronica musician MNDR when some friends and I took the trip down to Northfield, MN a few weeks back to see YACHT at Carleton College's "The Cave." My delight with Bobby Birdman and MNDR and subsequent lack of enthusiasm for YACHT's performance reminded me of when I saw Jose Gonzalez at The Cedar years back: Openers Psapp and Juana Molina blew me away while I was less than impressed with the headliner. Aye Hip Hopper! In a word: brilliant
Submitted by Princess on Mon, 04/06/2009 - 3:07pmWhile the rest of you gear up for the Morrissey concert tonight, I'm at work simultaneously procrastinating and staying occupied by listening to bits of new music. On a recent trip to India, I bought a bunch of Hindi albums to bring back to Cedar staff, choosing my purchases solely on the preposterousness of the album covers. One of these albums, titled "Aye Hip Hopper" by an artist named IshQ Bector was added to my shopping cart in part because of his self-assured visage on the front but primarily because of the back, which features the artist peeing on a wall.
