This week's shows
Dewi Sant (8pm Fri Feb 19) is the full band project of Michael Morris, tonight celebrating the release of his debut album May:
"a collection of shuffling folk-pop confessionals that dresses up Morris's simple strumming and plaintive, subdued tenor in beautiful accoutrements (most prominently cello, pedal steel, and some lovely female harmony vocals). It's a remarkably assured and focused collection, sounding more like the work of an artist hitting mid-career stride than a full-length debut...With the ethos of Brother Ali beating in his heart and the sweeping folk-rock songwriting of Fleet Foxes in his hands, Morris's future looks bright" (Rob van Alstyne, City Pages) Also appearing: The Starfolk and Alison Rae.

The centerpiece of a weekend of activities surrounding the release of educational psychologist Jennifer Salima Holt's book Sacred Gateway of Grief and Loss, Songs and Stories of Light, Love and Liberation with Jennifer Salima Holt (8pm Sat Feb 20) will feature music from Jennifer along with two other former members of 80's group Tetes Noires, sacred chant, spoken word and a multimedia presentation. The program will weave together themes of hope, healing and enlightenment, prevailing even in the most bleak of circumstances.

If you think children's music can't be catchy and stand on its own merits, take a few listens to this, and then try to shake the tune out of your head. Cedar Family welcomes back one of our most popular family artists, Justin Roberts and the Not Ready For Naptime Players (11am Sun Feb 21). Advance ticket purchase highly recommended.

With Taken By Trees and El Perro Del Mar (7.30pm Tues Feb 23) touring together, it was as if, according to one commentator, "a veritable Thelma and Louise of downtempo, electro-flecked folk melancholia let loose on the highways of North America. Fans of glamorous, gamine Swedes making sad, sad music rejoice!" (Anthony Crew, About.com Guide to Alternative Music)
Sponsored by Radio K and vita.mn Highly recommended!

Also highly recommended, Canadian indie folk singer Basia Bulat (7.30pm Wed Feb 24), touring in support of her second album Heart of My Own. Basia plays a mean autoharp, has vocal chops to match, and gets kickass support from raised-on-punk brother Bobbie on drums. Toronto's Katie Stelmanis has just been added to the bill.  Presented by First Avenue at The Cedar.
