Please help spread the word, and generously support the newly hatched, vitally important benefit for Haiti this Friday! There's also bluegrass/old-time, contemporary indie rock from a popular local label, and a folk show with an olde Minnesota twist.

This week's shows
A sweet double bill starts the weekend off right, in the form of Bearfoot with Sweetgrass (7.30pm Thu Jan 21). Bearfoot originally hail from Alaska, but have been leaving big tracks in the lower 48, perhaps most notably by being Telluride Bluegrass Band Champions (following in the footsteps of Nickel Creek and Dixie Chicks). Their music nicely straddles pop, bluegrass and old-timey, with some of the sweetest harmonies around. You can listen to their new album Doors and Windows (Compass) here and even better, catch them live at The Cedar as they wend their way to a Sunday gig at the noteworthy Celtic Connections festival in Glasgow. Fans of Crooked Still won't want to miss this one. Wisconsin's Sweetgrass will provide a mellifluous opening set, more firmly rooted in the bluegrass tradition.

Can't say enough about Friday's Solidarité avec Haiti: Earthquake Relief Fundraiser (6pm Fri Jan 22). This is a community-generated event sponsored by a group of local musicians, dancers and visual artists as a fundraiser for the victims of the recent earthquake in Port-au-Prince, Haiti. There'll be food from Victor’s 1959 Café and The French Meadow, an art auction with work by Víctor Yépez and Bernardo Guzmán, and a string of great acts are performing: Maria Isa, Charanga Tropical with Viviana Pintado, Batucada do Norte, Grupo Caribe, dance groups including ABCapoeira and the Collective Dance Co., Pardo, Kenn Wanaku, Alex Puglia, Carlos Diaz and Nube. All door, art and food sale proceeds will go directly to Doctors Without Borders / Medicins Sans Frontieres Emergency Relief Fund. Suggested $10 donation at the door. This is an easy, fun way to make a difference.
Expect another big turnout for Saturday's 10th anniversary celebration for locals Modern Radio Record Label (5pm Sat Jan 23). The Plastic Constellations are even reuniting for a special one-off performance, along with other labelmates Skoal Kodiak, STNNNG, and Vampire Hands. Standing room only so you have room to move. Note the early start time. As always at The Cedar, it's an all ages show.

For their latest recording project, gems of the local folk music community Curtis and Loretta (7.30pm Sun Jan 24), took a step backwards 150 years, and unearthed the songs our Minnesota predecessors were singing in the 1850's. Our Heritage in Song features 15 songs steeped in the language of farming, forestry, the sea, long separations, and hard living. Be transported back to another era with Loretta's harp, Curtis' guitar and mandolin, and timeless songs!
Sponsored by 90.3 and 106.7 KFAI.
That's all for this week. See you at The Cedar soon…and remember, bring a friend or three!
