Orange Mighty Trio with Michael Rossetto & Nicholas Lemme and The Get Up Johns

06/16/2007 - 7:00pm

Equally conversant in traditional roots music, classical forms and jazz improvisation, the Orange Mighty Trio delves into mostly original material, sprinkled with a few fiddle tunes and other favorites. This adventurous cross-pollination on violin (Zack Kline--also of Piper's Crow), piano (Mike Vasich) and bass (Nick Gaudette) creates a unique crossover ensemble with a wide range-- a contemporary chamber-music-fiddle-band, you might say. Joining Orange Mighty Trio for the evening are Michael Rossetto &
Nicholas Lemme from Spaghetti Western String Co. and sweet harmonizing
old-time country duo The Get Up Johns! CITY PAGES A-LIST PICK!

"the trio could venture almost anywhere, and often does. Essentially forging its own mutant chamber music context, the group stretches its web from jazz through classical to bluegrass, mixing the odd
traditional piece among originals. Kline's fiddle, which also graces the Celtic-folk outfit Piper's Crow, leads the way, emulating Grappelli here, Heifetz there, Vassar Clements over there. The sprightly trad tune "Billy in the Low Ground," laced with cross-genre improvisations, kicks off the EP. "Energy Fields," meanwhile, is full of stately lyricism, while "Millennium" is a blues-tinged new-grass romp." (Rick Mason, A-List pick 6/16/07, City Pages

"Sounding like an unlikely cross between Spaghetti Western String CO. and the Bad Plus, the OMT should easily find a local audience with its debut EP. The adventurous instrumental trio...combines mountainy roots music with urban jazz and hints of classical, careening between beautiful, bold and a bit of bombast." (Chris Reimenschneider, Vita-MN)

"An intriguing fusion of contemporary chamber music
with American roots music that's more lively than solemn and works far
better than it should." (Ross Raihala, Pioneer Press)
