Po' GirlVagabond lullabies, beat poetry, inner-city blues. These urban minstrels pen harmony drenched melodies to warm your toes. Take the bellows of the blues, the wail of the gypsy fiddle,punk-rock street poetry, a Cajun love song and depression era jazz. mix it all up and add some old R&B. This music is rich with musical influences, sweetness, grit and soul. In the brief few years this group of hard travelling musical iconoclasts has released three albums to critical acclaim while touring around the world, criss-crossing the United States and Canada in their sturdy old van "Shaggy". They wowed audiences across the UK on four tours, and won over festival goers (including those attending their several appearances at the Winnipeg Folk Festival) with their powerful, passionate and spirited live show.
The current line up of Po' Girl includes Allison Russell (one of the founding members), alongside virtuoso fiddler Diona Davies and multi-instrumentalist Awna Teixeira. These three ladies all sing, write and perform on a stunning array of instruments including banjo, guitar, clarinet, piano,accordion, gutbucket bass, electric bass, harmonica, penny-whistle, fiddle and much more. With their 2007 release "Home To You" they hit 4 different continents and 15 different countries. They have headed into the studio again recently with their new partner in musical mayhem, craftsman luthier Benny Sidelinger of "The Shiftless Rounders" who adds his masterful dobro guitar stylings, and banjo claw hammering to the Po' Girl sound. Already highly diverse, the new addition promises to take Po' Girl in even more musical directions!
