Rory Block Steve ForbertTwo well seasoned ace musicians with attitude, country blueswoman Rory Block, and raspy singer-songwriter Steve Forbert in one fine night of music-making! Each artist has a new album out, and an extensive back catalog of old favorites to draw upon; each is a consummate live performer.
Heralded as “a living landmark” (Berkeley Express), “a national treasure” (Guitar Extra), and “one of the greatest living acoustic blues artists” (Blues Revue), Rory Block has committed her life and her career to preserving the Delta blues tradition and bringing it to life for 21st century audiences around the world. A traditionalist and an innovator at the same time, she wields a fiery and haunting guitar and vocal style that redefines the boundaries of acoustic blues and folk. The New York Times declared: “Her playing is perfect, her singing otherworldly as she wrestles with ghosts, shadows and legends.” Her 2006 release The Lady and Mr Johnson features Rory’s sizzling interpretations of thirteen of the King of the Delta Blues Robert Johnson's classic tracks! What has Steve Forbert been up to since his meteoric rise to fame in the late seventies? He’s had his share of hard times—legal battles with record labels, hundreds of thousands of miles on the road criss-crossing the country as a cult club performer, and more than his share of commercially fairly unsuccessful (but critically praised) albums—but the last few years have hinted at a strong mid-career renaissance: he has a new record label, his June 2007 release Strange Names & New Sensations has been very well received, and Forbert’s trademark song "Romeo's Tune" and "Goin' Down to Laurel" have both been licensed for inclusion in a movie called Margot at the Wedding, which will star Nicole Kidman and Jack Black and is slated for a fall 2007 release. A sense of contentment pervades the new album, although this doesn’t stop Forbert railing out against hypocrisy in his rockin’ Baghdad Dream.
